Why Tenerife Could Be the Perfect Escape From the British Winter
AD
There comes a point every winter when I start to wonder if it is ever going to be properly light outside again.
The days are short, the weather seems to alternate between cold, grey and raining, and leaving the house involves far too many layers.
Don’t get me wrong, there are things I genuinely love about winter. I will happily take any excuse for a cosy evening, a blanket and staying home when the weather outside is awful.
But there is also a point when I’ve had enough.
And suddenly the idea of getting on a plane and finding somewhere warmer starts sounding very appealing.
Escaping the British Winter

It isn’t hard to understand why so many of us start thinking about Tenerife winter sun once the colder months arrive.
While we’re looking outside at another grey afternoon and wondering why it seems to be getting dark ridiculously early, Tenerife is sitting there being considerably more tempting.
Of course, warmer weather is probably the obvious reason to go, but I don’t think that’s the only appeal.
Winter can sometimes feel as though it goes on forever, particularly once Christmas is over. Having something completely different to look forward to, even if it is only for a few days, can make a nice change from counting down until spring.
There’s More Than Sunshine

I don’t think I’d want to travel somewhere and spend the entire time beside a pool.
I’d definitely want some time doing absolutely nothing, because isn’t that half the point of a holiday? But I’d also want to see some of where I’d actually travelled to.
Tenerife has a really interesting landscape thanks to its volcanic history. There’s Mount Teide, dramatic cliffs, black-sand beaches and plenty of coastline to explore.
And you don’t necessarily need to have every day planned down to the minute.
Sometimes wandering around somewhere new, finding somewhere to eat and seeing what you stumble across can be just as enjoyable as ticking attractions off a list.
In fact, trying to cram everything into one trip sounds like a very good way of coming home needing another holiday.
Staying by the Sea

There’s something about being close to the sea that makes a holiday feel like a holiday to me.
Perhaps it’s simply because it is so different from everyday life, but give me a good sea view and I’ll happily sit and stare at it for far longer than is probably reasonable.
So, if you’re the same, staying at an oceanfront hotel in Tenerife could be worth considering.
Landmar Playa La Arena is in Puerto de Santiago, on Tenerife’s west coast, and close to Playa de la Arena, which has black volcanic sand rather than the golden beaches we often picture when thinking about a sunshine holiday. The hotel also has rooms offering views towards the Atlantic.
And honestly, waking up and being able to see the sea sounds considerably nicer than opening the curtains to another rainy British morning.
You Don’t Have to Do Everything

I think there can be a strange pressure when you go away to make sure you’re making the most of it.
You’ve travelled all that way, so surely you should be out doing something every second?
Except… why?
If your idea of a good holiday involves exploring from morning until night, brilliant. If you’d rather read beside the pool for half the week and venture out when you feel like it, that’s fine too.
Personally, I think a mixture sounds pretty good.
See some things, eat some nice food, have a wander and also leave plenty of time for doing very little.
After all, you’re on holiday.
Something to Look Forward To
There is a lot to be said for having something nice sitting on the calendar during the darker months. I’ve shared some tips for enjoying more holidays throughout the year before, and sometimes even having a break to look forward to can make a difference.
A holiday isn’t going to make the British winter disappear. Sadly, you’re still going to come home to it.
But a few days somewhere warmer, with different scenery and perhaps an Atlantic view outside the window?
I can definitely see the appeal.
And if nothing else, it gives you a few days when wondering whether you need an umbrella, a winter coat and three extra layers before leaving the house can be someone else’s problem.
Would you like to jet off to Tenerife this year?
