How to Remove Red Wine Stains – Three Tried & Tested Methods
There’s nothing quite like unwinding with a nice glass of red wine – until disaster strikes and you end up spilling it all over your carpet. Not only is your drink wasted, but now you’ve got a glaring stain threatening to ruin your flooring. Before you panic, don’t worry! There are a few tried and tested ways to remove red wine stains from your carpet. Here are three of the best methods to save your carpet (and your sanity!).
1. Baking Soda – A Carpet Saver

Baking soda is a miracle worker for many household cleaning tasks, and red wine stains are no exception. If you’ve just spilled your wine (deep breaths), the first step is to blot up as much as possible using a clean cloth or kitchen towel. Avoid rubbing, as this will only push the stain deeper into the fibres.
Next, pour a small amount of cold water over the stain to help dilute the wine, and keep blotting until most of the moisture is gone. Now, it’s time for the baking soda trick.
Mix three parts baking soda with one part water to create a thick paste. Apply it generously over the stain and leave it to sit for at least 20 minutes. Once dry, simply vacuum up the residue, and the stain should be significantly reduced—or even gone completely!
2. The Power of White Vinegar & Washing Up Liquid

Vinegar is an excellent natural cleaning solution and works wonders on wine stains. Start by blotting as much of the red wine as possible, just like before. Then, mix together:
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid
- 2 cups of warm water
Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and gently blot at the stain. The vinegar helps neutralise the wine’s pigments, while the washing-up liquid lifts the stain from the carpet fibres. Keep blotting until the stain fades, then leave the area to air dry. If there’s a lingering vinegar scent, a quick spritz of fabric refresher will do the trick!
3. White Wine – The Unexpected Hero

Yes, you read that right! White wine can actually counteract the deep red pigments in red wine. If you have a bottle to hand, pour a small amount directly onto the stain—just enough to cover it, not drown it!
Using a clean, damp cloth, blot at the stain until the red starts to lift. For extra stain-removing power, sprinkle a little salt or baking soda over the area and let it sit for a few minutes before vacuuming it up. This method works best if you act fast, so don’t wait too long!
Spilling red wine on your carpet might feel like the end of the world, but with these handy tricks, you can tackle stains with ease. Whether you reach for baking soda, vinegar, or an unlikely bottle of white wine, there’s always a way to rescue your carpet.
