How To Make Your Static Caravan More Eco-Friendly
AD
Just because your static caravan is firmly rooted, doesn’t mean it can’t help you make progress towards an eco-friendlier future. In fact, there’s a great deal you can do to move towards a cleaner and greener planet – without going anywhere.
This includes changes to the caravan itself and some easy tweaks to your habits and behaviour. So, whether you own a static caravan and want to make it Greta-ready or are simply taking your eco-conscience on holiday with you, here are a few forward-looking steps to consider.
Everyone can…

Compost the kitchen waste
Keep a small compost bin in your kitchen so that vegetable and fruit waste can go back into the ground in a productive way, rather than into a landfill.
Buy eco-friendly
For example, recycled toilet paper, eco-friendly cleaning products, LED light bulbs and A+-rated energy appliances. It all helps.
Install solar panels
Depending on the type and location of your static caravan, it may be a good idea to install some solar panels on the roof. A trusted installer can measure your unit, create a plan for installation, and prepare a quote for you.
People living all around the Great Lakes State are looking for Michigan solar installers who will hook them up with panels so they can take advantage of the Sun. A strong system can generate anywhere from 1 to 10 watts of free energy.
If you decide to go ahead, remember to check with the site manager first, to ensure solar panels are permitted.
Use natural products
If you’re using sunscreen, insect repellent or other lotions, be aware that they can pollute the lakes and rivers where you take a dip. In particular, products that contain permethrin, commonly found in insect repellents, can be deadly to water creatures, so make sure that any products of this type are not water-soluble.
Biodegradable toothpaste and soap is also better for the natural world, so seek these out too if you can.
Ban the plastics
Buy local produce rather than pre-packaged food from the supermarket if you can (keep a look out for nearby farmers’ markets). And remember to have some tote bags to hand.
Making your own meals rather than buying individually packed items is also a good shout. Washable wax wraps make for a greener alternative to clingfilm for conserving any leftovers too.
Finally, stick to proper knives and forks, rather than their polluting plastic alternatives. Believe it or not, single-use utensils can take up to 1,000 years to decompose – a hefty payoff for stirring your cuppa.
Warm the person not the room
Put on some extra layers before reaching for the electric heater. Blankets, ‘slankets’ (blankets with sleeves), and sleeping bags all have their uses.
In fact, you might like to try the ‘hot water bottle in a sleeping bag’ trick. i.e. put a hot water bottle in the bottom of a sleeping bag then sit with your legs inside it. It’s cosy and draught-free.
Switch off
Switch all appliances off completely when not in use, rather than leaving them on standby.
Apply the ‘three for the sea’ rule
If your days out include trips to the seaside, try picking up at least three bits of litter left on the beach and disposing of it properly. It’s just one small act but if enough people do it, it’ll make a big difference to our plastic-filled oceans.
Static caravan owners can also…

Fit double glazing
With double glazing, your caravan is better insulated and so warmer in the winter. Double glazing can also play a valuable role in breaking the curse of condensation – and deterring its unattractive friend, mildew.
Fit a caravan skirt (yes, really…)
Caravan skirting is less of a fashion statement and more of a smart way to prevent windblown debris from gathering beneath your static caravan. And they also have excellent insulating properties which could mean you save a fair old chunk on your winter fuel bill.
Simple skirting kits can be found online and are relatively easy to install. Most people think they add to the aesthetics – and who wouldn’t want a skirt that stops their pipes from freezing?
You’re helping protect the planet – now help protect your caravan
Good on you for making changes to help protect the planet, but don’t forget to also protect your pride and joy. It’s a wise move to put specialist static caravan insurance in place – and to do this with an experienced provider who understands (and, dare we say, loves) the caravanning world.
