Films That Would’ve Been Fine If Only the Bad Guy Got a Good Night’s Sleep
Anyone is expected to be a little bit cranky when they haven’t had a decent night’s sleep, maybe not world domination cranky, but a little bit off nonetheless.
These guys took exhaustion to a whole new level with their antics, from world decimation to magical mayhem. Let’s take a look at a few iconic movie villains, who might have had a different outlook if they’d got their full 8 hours.
- Hannibal Lecter
Hannibal Lecter is arguably the world’s most famous cannibalistic psychopath. In ‘Silence of the Lambs’, he’s already imprisoned for unspeakable crimes, and even the FBI seem petrified of him.
But have you noticed those bags under his eyes? This is definitely a guy who needs a rest! He was a doctor after all, so maybe it wasn’t cannibalistic tendencies that landed him in the crazy category, maybe he was just too exhausted to tell supermarket meat from human? After all, it’s an easy mistake to make, right?!
- Norman Bates
Anyone who’s worked in a hotel will tell you, it’s a round the clock job. Between annoying guests, and broken pipes, it’s enough to drive anyone crazy. Poor Norman Bates probably didn’t mean to kill his guests, he was probably just exhausted from working through the night.
And all that ‘dressing up as his mother’ stuff? I’m sure he just got a bit confused as to which wardrobe was his. Haven’t we all been guilty of putting a top on backwards from time to time? It’s basically the same thing!
- Jack Torrance
Another hotel entry: is anyone starting to see a pattern? The Shining’s Overlook Hotel is huge, and the task of upkeep during the winter months is left to one man – Jack Torrance. Can you imagine having to look after over one hundred rooms by yourself? Throw in the creepy ghost kids, and it’s enough to keep anyone up at night.
If Jack had got the recommended amount of sleep, I’m sure he wouldn’t have attacked his wife with an axe or blown up the hotel; I mean, the solution is quite straightforward really.
- Ivan Drago

Ivan Drago is the ultimate Russian fighting machine. Anyone who’s watched Rocky knows that his monosyllabic conversational skills were a sign of one thing – sleep deprivation. It’s a classic symptom that we’ve all suffered from, particularly prevalent on a Monday morning.
With all that training and fake tan application, the poor guy probably didn’t get more than a few hours a night, bless him.
- The Joker
Ask any girl: putting makeup on every single morning is tough, and a sure sign of exhaustion is overdoing your lipstick a little, or maybe a lot in The Joker’s case.
You only have to look at him to see the signs: dishevelled hair, too much foundation, and don’t even get me started on the eyeliner. All these point to one thing: the guy needs some down time.
It can be tough antagonising Batman all the time, who for some reason decides to work until ridiculous hours of the night! Take that alongside a day job and it’s a recipe for disaster. Who wouldn’t try and destroy a city when they haven’t slept in a week? Let’s just give the poor guy a break.
- Agent Smith

For those of you who haven’t seen The Matrix, Agent Smith is literally the grumpiest guy around. Not only does he barely crack a smile, but he’s constantly bringing down the mood.
One thing that just might explain this relentless need for destruction is his constant need to wear sunglasses, even when he’s inside, or it’s raining, or well … you get the idea. It’s obvious because he’s hiding his bloodshot eyes.
He’s clearly being worked to the bone, but the poor guy just doesn’t want to let anyone down. That’s why he hides his pain behind a pair of dodgy shades, and his lack of any human emotion is clearly a symptom of him being overworked.
- Darth Vader
Can you imagine having to wear that boiling hot suit all day? It’s exhausting just thinking about it! To make things worse, he’s constantly in darkness (because it’s space, obviously), and so his brain is all confused and unable to relax, because it can’t tell when it’s night time.
That plus the added stress of having to deal with the borderline incompetent Storm Troopers must leave him with a near constant headache. All that anger suddenly makes sense.
- Freddie Krueger
So technically, Freddie Krueger never sleeps. He’s constantly up, and waiting to jump into unsuspecting teenagers’ dreams. But has anyone ever stopped and thought that maybe he just wants a nap? That’s probably why he’s so incredibly psychotic when haunting these kids’ dreams, he’s just jealous of their sleeping habits.
- John Doe

Se7en is basically a film about a guy who clearly needs to sleep. Between having to stalk his victims and to remove his fingerprints, it’s tough work being a serial killer. Add Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman constantly harassing you while you work, and the poor guy probably didn’t even get the chance to close his eyes for a second.
We’re sure that had John Doe been given a little bit of slack, he would have had time for his 8 hours, and realised that the world didn’t really need cleansing, his fatigue driven headache was just making him think it did.
- Lord Voldemort
Okay, we understand if you’re a little bit shocked at this entry, but hear us out. Voldemort was fighting for his whole life. He had armies of Death Eaters that were waiting for his command, plus Harry Potter kept killing parts of his soul, which is enough to give anyone a headache. Do you really think he had time to sleep? Probably not.
Maybe, had he gotten a bit more shut eye, he would have realised that Harry was a 17 year old who just wanted to finish his education; maybe Voldy would have backed off a little, at least until Harry graduated. But no, unfortunately the haze of exhaustion prevented him from thinking clearly, and instead we ended up with the deaths of Remus and Tonks … still hurts.
Here are just some of the bad guys who probably would’ve been a bit nicer had they had some sleep. How do we know they didn’t have a severe back problem, and were in desperate need of an orthopaedic mattress?

This is hilarious! I’ve always said that about Voldemort x
I always hated scary movies! LOL This lightened things up a bit, though.
I love how you see things differently. These are great villains indeed and most of them portrayed their roles very convincingly. With or without sleep, they would still- I guess- give their best performance. But nothing beats a good sleep to make each morning more productive.
This is quite an interesting perspective when it comes to sleep and those actors you have listed. I enjoy watching suspense and thrillers so much. Some of these are film favorites of mine that I have watched more than a few times.
Hilarious! Especially the one about the Joker. He’s probably staying up all night putting on that makeup. No wonder he’s grumpy!
It must be really tough for Joker to put his makeup! I can truly understand where is he coming!
They are just like us. If we are deprived for a good night sleep, we ended up acting like a monster the next day.
Because I value my sleep I’ve not seen any of these movies. lol I wouldn’t be able to sleep for weeks if I actually watched these.
LOOOOVED this post! You are so right on quite a few of them! (I actually do like my favorite: Darth Vader, grumpy – go figure!)
Thanks, I enjoyed this post a lot!
I’m not in a movie, ha, but I could sure use a good nights sleep myself. I can’t believe I haven’t seen a couple of these movies. I’ve got to change that and pick one to start with, tonight.
This is cute! I think Jack Torrance and Freddie Kreuger really did need a good night’s sleep. They would have been much less grumpy!
And people wonder why I say sleep is for the weak! Muahahahaha!
I love watching movies and I almost watched all in your list. And I agree with that. Awesome list btw!
You’re right! A magical slumber surely would have softened their personalities a bit. lol
This is really fun! It makes me laugh.
Haha this is so funny! Cute tongue in cheek post. We like the villains mean so I’m glad they’re sleep deprived!
This is a cute post indeed because each bad guys does actually need a good nights sleep. lol I know I could use one so maybe I will have to check out Happy Bed’s best selling beds. Thanks for sharing the bad guys and films.
I love those films!! They just need to sleep a few more hours.
Everyone deserve to sleep through the night or at least for 8 hours. I can’t imagine not turning into a monster when I don’t get enough sleep. Ha! I think this was an entertaining post, thanks for the good read! I definitely had a good laugh!
Hilarious! It’s refreshing to read something like this today, just what I needed! Thanks for the good laugh! And really, who doesn’t get cranky when they don’t get enough sleep, right? I mean, maybe they just need a break… one that involves no alarm clocks, just a comfy bed and some soft pillows. Lol!
what a clever blog post-it really had me smiling ear to ear and loved all the great photos! it was a really good list–they definately could have had a better nights’ sleep! HA HA!
I gotta say that, of all the ones on your list, the one that I probably would agree with you the most on was Jack Torrance. I just watched The Shining for the first time a couple of months ago. I definitely feel that he could have benefited from a good night’s sleep.
Haha! A comfortable night of sleep really does change your mood for the entire day. I know I get pretty irritable if I have a bad night of sleep.
This post was so great! I’m sure these villians would have been a little nicer if only they could get some more sleep
I have never thought about it this way!! It would be interesting to see what the bad guys wold be like if they got a decent night sleep.
HAHA love it! Such a funny post!!
HAHA love it! Such a funny post 🙂
Hahaha…this is really funny. I know that I turn into a total and complete monster when I’m not well rested. Needless to say, it was incredibly hard when my kids were infants and didn’t sleep well.
How clever! We love scary movies in our house. Of course as a former therapist, I tend to analyze.
I love this idea. I wonder how these movies would have been different if the bad guy got better sleep. Those would have been interesting storylines, for sure.
I want to see that movie, the Silence of the Lamb but I never get that chance to. I will record this one day and sit dow to watch it.
Ha ha! This is a unique perspective to take. I love it! The movies would have been VERY different had those characters gotten a good night’s sleep, I’m sure!
Hilarious post, I guess we could all benefit from more sleep. As a chronic insomniac, I know the pain of life without sleep.
Lol if they did I bet these movies would have been quite boring! I haven’t seen most of them but I could only imagine!
Lol! Ivan Drago definitely needed more sleep than he was getting. All that training sounds like tough work.
hahaha! This made me laugh out loud….Especially about Darth Vader! Incompetent Storm Troopers. lol
They really all need to sleep….Love it x
Yeah but imagine if they did get a good nights sleep? They wouldn’t be half as interesting! Batman would be one hell of a boring film without The Joker. But hey at least he can crack a smile! ?
