If you want to start a career in the fashion industry there are a few things you should know. This article may help you to learn how you can turn your passion into a successful career.

You will still have to work long hours and gain years of experience to become successful. Finding the job you are good at and love will help you go far in the industry and set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. Many jobs require artistic talent and technical skills and some others are also based on business knowledge. You just have to find what your natural talents are and build on those. While you are studying, look to take courses in business, speech or even sewing that may guide you to your natural fit. If you want to hone your artistic talent to design or create, you can choose an education that focuses on art. There are also many different fashion short courses available that explain the basics of various fields of this fascinating industry and that can help you to understand it better.
After you have an idea about what type of career you want in the fashion industry, begin to look for internships. This is the best way to build your resume whether you are still in school. Internships allow you to gain experience and network to help refine your skills and set you up for a full time job. In this industry you should stay humble and understand that you will have to work your way up to that glamorous position at a famous magazine (or anything else you may be dreaming of). As with any industry, dreams of becoming a famous designer must be coupled with the realistic idea of the road ahead. Hard work and dedication along with a love for fashion will help you land a job in this competitive and exciting field!

I’ve never been interested in the fashion industry but I remember spending time in a school with a fashion program. Those students were so passionate. It was truly inspiring!
It’s so important to know what you’re getting yourself into with something like this, rather than just liking clothes. Sometimes it’s better to keep things as a hobby unless you’re REALLY sure!

Internships and apprenticeships are so important for most trade industries, it’s just such a shame there aren’t more options in every one. It’s fab to know that there are good options in the fashion industry 🙂

Internships are important for those stating out, I know people that have worked their way up into the fashion industry this way.
My niece has just today started an 11 week unpaid internship in Central London over 200 miles away from home. She is so passionate and talented with textiles and fashion and this is a great opportunity for her. She has won National awards for her work so far but this industry is not for the feint hearted. If anyone is thinking of a career in the fashion industry I would second that they need to take your advice VERY seriously!
