Dog-Proofing Your Home: How to Keep Your Canine Companion Safe and Happy
AD
Having a dog comes with many responsibilities. Whether you’re planning to get a new dog or already have a four-legged friend, you must ensure that your home can provide them with a safe environment. That might help you to improve their health and overall well-being.
Doggos are naturally very curious creatures, which could get them into a lot of trouble if they’re not supervised, or their environment isn’t properly secured. Transforming your home into a safe and dog-friendly space could help prevent accidents, injuries, and potential poisoning. Of course, you might make some changes to your home.
But at the same time, you need to ensure that your pet gets all the nutrients with raw dog food and other kinds of diet. That way, you might be able to enjoy the company of your pet for years to come with minimal worries. Here’s how you can keep your fur pal safe and happy in the comfort of your home.
Check Your Dog’s Diet

Eating is an essential part of the day for any dog. And when you have a four-legged friend at home, you must look after their diet. Providing them with the right nutrition could greatly impact their life expectancy, energy levels and health condition.
You also need to look at the quality of food and look for food that could help your pet to become healthier. With companies like ProDog Raw, you can get raw dog food delivered straight to your door. No matter what kind of food you give your dog, make sure you control how much they eat.
Overfeeding them might lead to obesity which could become a starting point for more severe health problems. Ensure that your dog has access to fresh water at all times. And when it comes to treats, make sure they come in moderation.
Learn How To Understand Your Dog
The first thing you need to do when creating a safe space is to ensure you know your dog. Focus on their behaviour, habits, and personality. Different breeds have different temperaments, energy levels, and other characteristics.
Researching all the information about your dog’s breed could help you to understand their natural tendencies and make suitable changes to your home. You also need to take into account the age of your canine friend. Learn about their medical history in detail. Then, you might be able to identify any underlying health issues that could affect their behaviour or require special care.
You also need to remember that all dogs have different likes and dislikes. Knowing all the small quirks and preferences of your fur pal could help you to understand what you need to do to keep them safe.
Finally, you need to understand their body language. Looking for the signs might help you to know when they feel stressed, anxious, or uncomfortable.
Create A Safe Zone

To ensure that your four-legged friend is safe in your home, you should provide them with a designated space. Your dog could retreat to the safe zone when they feel scared, stressed, or anxious. Giving them such a space could help them to feel more secure and relaxed.
But where should the safe zone be?
Choose a quiet and low-traffic area in your home. It should be a space where your pet can rest and feel secure without being disturbed by others. Getting a soft dog bed or blanket could help you to make your canine friend more comfortable. Keep some of their favourite toys there, and you might want to leave them a treat once in a while.
Training your dog could help them understand the space’s purpose and make the most of the safety and comfort it can provide.
Hide Away Any Toxic Substances
Dogs can be very curious and might want to taste some of the things in your home. Keeping toxic substances out of reach could help protect your pet from harm. To begin with, you should list all the household products and chemicals that could be harmful to your dog, such as cleaning products, pesticides, and medications.
Once you identify all the hazards, you should keep the substances in cabinets or locked drawers out of the pet’s reach. When you need to get rid of some of these things, make sure you dispose of them properly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
It would be best if you also looked at any plants in the building. Some plants or flowers could be toxic to dogs and might harm them. So, keep them out of the canine’s reach or consider removing them completely.
Even though you do your best to protect your dog from danger, an accident might happen. Make sure you know the signs of poisoning, and contact your vet when needed.
Ensure That Your Garden Is Secure

When you have a garden, you must extend the safety measures to the outside space. First of all, you need to ensure that your garden is securely fenced and that there aren’t any holes or gaps where your dog could escape.
Checking the fence could help you notice any weaknesses you need to address. Keep all the gates closed and secure to prevent your fur pal from wandering off or getting into areas that could be unsafe. Then, you should remove any hazards in the garden, such as toxic plants, sharp objects or poisonous substances like fertilisers or pesticides that could put the dog in danger.
To protect your pet from the weather, you should provide them with a shelter that could make them feel secure and comfortable no matter what time of the year it is.
Invest In Dog-Friendly Furniture
Dogs can bring you joy, but you might get upset if you notice that parts of your home get damaged. Therefore, you might want to invest in dog-friendly furniture that could keep all the members of your household comfortable.
Choose furniture made from durable and easy-to-clean materials. It should also be appropriately sized for your dog. For instance, a smaller dog might have problems getting up on a bigger chair or sofa. If possible, try to avoid sharp edges and corners.
Rounded edges could keep your pet safe even if they bump into furniture by accident and keep them safe. You can protect your furniture even further by investing in slipcovers that are easy to remove and wash.
Provide Your Dog With A Safe Environment
Every dog owner wants to ensure their dog is safe in their home. However, pets might often be curious, and it might be challenging to protect them when you can’t keep an eye on them. Taking steps to adjust your home and adopt safety measures could help you to improve their overall well-being.
Ensure your dog has a balanced diet and constant access to fresh water. Then, you should look for anything that might be dangerous to your dog, such as toxic plants or substances and hide them in places your four-legged friend can’t reach.
Get furniture that’s easy to clean, and if you have a garden, ensure your dog can stay safe when spending time outside.
But before you take any specific steps, you need to understand your pet. Learn about their breed and personality. That might help you to move in the right direction and keep your beloved dog out of harm’s way.

I have a jack russell cross and she is my best friend!! she does like her own space at times, thankfully I have teenagers so they don’t annoy her too much lol! we spend a lot of food for her, I like to make sure she is getting a high quality food
Aww bless there’s nothing quite like having a dog – sadly I’m too poorly for one now which has been hard to come to terms with this year.
Very Good
Some great ideas, we have a Labrador and he is very food orientated. We have to try and monitor his diet.
Much of that information also applies to cats! To stop them scratching furniture, you’re supposed to cover the affected areas in double-sided adhesive tape. Cats won’t like the sensation but it’s not dangerous or harmful to them in any way. Common advice is to get a cat scratching post, but this doesn’t alwys work. My boy studiously ignores the two posts I bought (for upstairs and downstairs) and scratches where he wants to! Grrr…..
We don’t have a pet but reading this is almost the same as caring for any human being or any other animal. Diet will always be important as it is what goes inside our body and fuel us and without the right nutrition, it can severely affect our mood and health. And like children, dogs are curious but with sharp teeth so any toxic substance around can be gnawed through
Christmas can be specially hazardous our greedy westie ate coated polystyrene apple decorations while we were out. He took them off the tree. The vet only recommended drinking lots of water and eventually his eyes and everything at the other end was no longer red.
