A Comprehensive Guide: How to Clean a Mattress Properly
AD
A mattress is more than just a place to sleep; it’s helping our bedroom become a room for relaxation and rejuvenation. However, over time, our mattresses accumulate dust, sweat, and allergens, making regular cleaning essential to help towards a good night’s sleep.
Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to clean your mattress properly, to help this much-needed bedroom item stay in top condition.
Preparation

A good mattress is a real investment and of course, as with any cleaning process preparation is key. Strip back the mattress of all linen, including sheets, pillowcases and mattress protectors and put them into the wash.
Vacuuming
Your first step is going to be vacuuming the mattress. Your upholstery attachments can come in very useful during this process. Make sure to focus on seams, crevices and edges where dust, dirt, and debris tend to accumulate.
Spot Cleaning
Spend some time inspecting the mattress for any stains or spills, these can be treated with a gentle upholstery cleaner or a mix of detergent and water. Blot the stains with a clean cloth and from the outside towards the centre to prevent spreading. Remember to let your mattress fully dry after any cleaning process.
It is important to stay clear of using harsh chemicals or excessive moisturise. These can both damage the fabric or lead to mould growth.
Deodorising

If your mattress isn’t smelling its best, then sprinkling baking soda over the surface can help. It is a natural deodorant and can help neutralise unpleasant smells as well as absorb moisturise.
Leave the baking powder to do its work for a few hours before vacuuming off.
Steam Cleaning
If you are looking for a deeper clean, then you might want to consider steam cleaning your mattress. This is something which will take time and planning as you will need to factor in the time to dry into this plan.
You are going to want to use a steam cleaner that heats the water to 100 degrees as this will be hot enough to help kill bacteria and dust mites. So, make sure you check the specifications before use.
Mattress Protectors
Investing in a quality mattress protector is a must. This can help to keep your mattress safe from any spills and stains. Remember to wash them regularly per the manufacturer’s instructions to help prolong the life of your protector.
Air and Sunlight
Making the most of a sunny day and airing your mattress in the sunlight can be a good idea. Natural sunlight can help disinfect and deodorise. It can be worth removing the mattress completely however even just folding back the covers can help, as you won’t be trapping in any heat and moisture from the night before.

Replace
While cleaning your mattress can help improve its lifespan it is important to know how long your mattress is meant to last for, as sleeping one which is too old can cause pain and discomfort. The average mattress lifespan is 7-10 years however as you clean look out for signs of wear such as sagging which might show you may need to think about buying a new one.
Hopefully, these steps can easily fit into your mattress care routine and will help keep it clean and fresh and extend its lifespan. Remember regular cleaning can help towards better sleep hygiene and overall well-being as well.
