There’s something truly special about a picture book that feels like it holds a little bit of magic inside its pages, and What a Little Star by Eva Le Bon is exactly that kind of book.
Bright, beautifully illustrated and full of gentle life lessons, this wonderful rhyming story follows an adorable duck family, Splish, Splash and Puddles, as they learn to waddle through life’s ups and downs under the watchful eye of a loving Moon.
And honestly? It’s one of those stories that feels just as meaningful for grown-ups as it does for little ones.
A Story That Celebrates Life’s Mix of Moments

At its heart, What a Little Star reminds children that life isn’t always perfectly smooth; it’s a bit of a mix. Some days are fun, some are thoughtful, and some are a little bit wobbly. And that’s okay.
With help from the charismatic Moon, the duck family learn to:
- Keep busy
- Find ways to waddle through tricky patches
- Celebrate the joyful moments
- Accept that not everything is “hunky-dory” all the time
It’s a wonderfully gentle way to introduce emotional resilience without it feeling heavy or preachy.
Because sometimes the best lessons come wrapped in rhyme and accompanied by ducks.
Perfect for Reading Aloud
Written in rhyme and packed with beautiful illustrations on every page, this is a story that’s made to be read together. It flows beautifully aloud, making it ideal for bedtime or those cosy afternoon sofa snuggles.
There are little messages woven throughout, along with touches of song and rhythm that help to make it engaging for children. It also offers plenty of jumping-off points for conversations about feelings, confidence and navigating life’s small challenges. Meaning it is both thoughtful without being overwhelming and light-hearted without losing depth.
A Personalised Touch That Makes It Extra Special
One of the sweetest features of What a Little Star is the opportunity to personalise it for a child you know. Towards the end of the story, there’s a big, bright gold star where you can add their name.
That small detail turns a charming picture book into something truly keepsake-worthy.
As such this book can make for a wonderful gift for:
- Birthdays
- New babies
- Christenings
- “Just because” moments
- Or even as a reassurance gift during big life changes
It’s the sort of book that feels like it could be treasured for years.
Bringing the Characters to Life
If that wasn’t enough magic, there’s even more to enjoy. Lisa Dobbs from Wee Woolly Wonderfuls has created crochet kits with everything needed to make the story’s characters.
That means Splish, Splash, Puddles and even Moon can leap off the page and into real life for interactive, imaginative play.
Books that extend beyond reading time always feel like such a win.
