8 Things You Need To Do For a Healthy Night Time Routine
Beauty sleep is a myth, right? Wrong. It plays an important role in rejuvenating your mind and body after a busy day at work or a night on the town – and everything in between. Which is why it’s important to have a healthy night time routine.
Your body does a lot of its repair work through the night, so there’s no point limiting your beauty routine to the morning.
A healthy night time routine will help your skin look radiant and you’ll feel refreshed and ready for tomorrow’s challenges.
There’s also an important link between your appearance and sleep. In a study published in the British Medical Journal, Swedish researchers discovered people who were sleep-deprived were more tired, less healthy and less attractive than those who’d had a decent night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can also damage your skin barrier, the top layer of our skin which keeps it protected.
So if you didn’t get your beauty sleep last night, it’s time to start making some changes. You don’t have to start hours before bed, but if you can make a few of these changes you should soon start getting plenty of healthy sleep.
Follow these eight steps – guys, you’re included too – and you’ll be glowing again in no time (plus click here for some more fantastic glow up tips to help you).

Take your make-up off
First up, make-up removal – probably the most important step in your night time skincare routine. Before you drift off into the land of nod, take your make-up off. No excuses. Leaving it on will ensure you have irritated eyes, clogged pores and make-up residue staining your silk pillowcase (more on that below…).
Wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser or make-up remover and tone using a cotton pad. If you’re wearing a lot of make-up, you might want to do double cleansing, to leave your skin feeling really clean.
For really clean feeling skin you may want to use an exfoliator. I would recommend using one that contains glycolic acid which helps to exfoliate the outer, dead layer of the skin, making your skin more luminous and giving you a lovely glow.
Have a warm bath
Get nice and relaxed with a lovely warm bath. Put on some chilled music, dim the lights and ease your body into the tub (haven’t got a bath? A shower will do).
It’s great to have some “me time”, isn’t it? However, if you want to share that time alongside your partner, who are we to say no…?
Apply night cream to your face
Battling the elements can be difficult, come wind, rain or shine. And it’s your face that will take the full brunt.
Put some life back into your skin with a good night cream – one of my favourite skin care products. Apply it to your face and neck and let it work its magic. People with all skin types should use a night cream, even if you have oily skin and it’s especially important if you have dry skin.
While you’re asleep, it will hydrate and nourish you, and you’ll wake up with soft, plump skin so it’s important to make this part of your bedtime ritual.
Don’t forget to take care of the delicate skin around your eye area too and use a specialised eye cream for this. These often have anti-aging properties and will protect against fine lines and dark circles.
You may also want to use a serum which contains hyaluronic acid which can be layered with your moisturiser. This will help to rehydrate skin on multiple levels, leaving your skin feeling plumped, smoother, softer and healthier.
Scrub your feet and remember the socks
Don’t forget your feet. You’ve been on them all day and now it’s their turn to get pampered.
Give them a scrub before massaging foot cream or balm on your heels and any chapped areas.
Finish by putting some socks on to help your skin absorb the cream and keep the moisture locked in.

Hand cream is important
Constant washing and exposure to dry air leads to dry, cracked hands – and a good reason to get the hand cream out.
Use a thick, slightly greasy cream and moisturise your hands and fingernails. Applying it before you sleep will allow the cream to sink in and do its work.
Sleep on silk
Silk pillowcases aren’t just for royalty and celebrities.
They might be a tad more expensive than your regular cotton or polyester options but they are worth it.
If you want to stop your hair getting tangled and frizzy through the night, it’s worth investing in some.
Slip on an eye mask
A dark room will help you sleep well.
However, if your curtains aren’t thick enough to stop light streaming in, try an eye mask.
Want to match it with your silk pillowcase?
A silk eye mask can help to soothe skin and lock in moisture – perfect after the effort you put into moisturising your face earlier.

Get a good night’s sleep
Want to know a secret?
The best tip for a healthy night time routine is to get a good night’s kip full of healthy sleep. Ensure that you establish a good sleep routine and practice good sleep hygiene, going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day. This will help to keep your circadian rhythm intact.
You’ve got your silk pillowcases – match them with a cosy duvet and fresh cotton sheets.
A comfortable bed is important too.
A good mattress will ensure you don’t wake up feeling achy. One brand is going a long way to make sure you have a dreamy sleep courtesy of their mattresses.
Always make sure your room is at the right temperature – too cold and you’ll be shivering through the night; too hot and you’ll wake up in a pool of sweat – not a good look. Your body temperature needs to be just right for sleep time.
Bad sleep habits include watching TV before bed and being on your phone. Switch off all devices at least 20 minutes before you go to sleep or, even better, an hour before bedtime. Also, if you wake up in the middle of the night, don’t turn them back on – this won’t help you to get back to sleep.

These are some amazing tips and facts. I always take warm bath before going to bed. Thanks for sharing this article
These are all really great tips. I really need to pick up some silk pillowcases as I’ve noticed the side I lay on in bed has started to get super wrinkly compared to the other side and silk pillowcases are supposed to help with that!

Good luck with the silk pillowcase I really hope it works well for you.

Yes getting good sleep is always best thing. thanks for sharing all the wonderful tips. I take warm bath always before going to bed.
It can really relax you before you head to bed can’t it.
I suffer terribly with my sleep and it definitely takes its toll some days. I already do some of these tips but there’s a few I haven’t thought to try. Silk bedding will be on my shopping list this weekend!
It is so hard when you don’t get a good nights sleep for whatever reason. I hope the ideas help a little.
i absolutely love those steps! the most important thing for me is to remove my makeup and apply a good night cream.
Most definitely a good cream is a must isn’t it.
These are some great tips, Sarah! I really need to get into the routine of having a night time bath, I always seem to get one during the day while everyone is out and I can relax
It can be so nice to just have a warming bath before bed especially at this time of year I think.
I am in need a good bedtime routine. I like your ideas and will give them a try.
I hope it helps you put together a great routine for yourself.
I really need to start a new beauty regime. I’ve heard such great things about wearing socks in bed after applying a cream, I’m worried I’d overheat in the night
The best thing to do is get some cotton socks that are light – you can get special ones for it and they help keep you cooler.
Sleep on silk is definitely working for me! We have silk pillows and there’s a positive difference I can note!
Oh yay it is amazing to hear it is working for you :).
I need to get better about removing makeup. I just bought some of those cloths you just wet and viola!
They are great aren’t they – I love how simple they are to use.
I care about my skin and body and I pretty much do all these things! Except the eye mask. I will have to get one soon!
I hope an eye mask helps you a little.
I like this routine. I tend to fall asleep as is and then have to get up and wash my face and brush my teeth. I need to start going to bed on time…Thanks for the reminder!
Oh no! I hope this helps you put together some sort of routine.
These are the best bedtime beauty routine. There are some new ideas like feet scrub before sleeping and of course, using silk in the bedroom.
These are really a helpful and great tips. All i do is shower properly before bedtime, however, i have seen my wife removing her make-ups a couple of times. I will send this to her.
I hope it gives her some hints and tips!
I always take my makeup off before bed without fail. I hate the thought of waking up with it still on, getting all dirty on my pilllow!! xxx
It would be horrid wouldn’t it! I can understand though why sometimes it just feels like too much.
No matter how tired I am, I ALWAYS take my makeup off and do my skincare routine. I think it’s a great habit. Great post!
Khanak x
It really is something everyone should try and do before they head off for the night.
Sleep is extremely important for your skin because it’s when the skin heals itself. I have just discovered porridge oats make an excellent mask and wash before bed and it’s so natural for my sensitive skin.
It is amazing what you do can with oats isn’t it!
Eye mask and me are best friends !! Love this post
They can be such a big help aren’t they to help you relax sometimes.
I really wish I had the time to do all of these things before bed. That would be dreamy!
It is crazy how time goes by isn’t it 🙁
Needing sleep and about to go get some… so off to get socks first, great tip!!
Haha good luck I hope you have a good sleep.
My mom had a special pillowcase when we were growing up. It was silk and it helped keep her hairstyle in place! Times don’t change much.
I love that, it is almost as though some things are coming back around.
I have to get better about moisturizing myself before bed. I do pretty well by washing my face, body and oiling up.
I have to admit I struggle to moisturise every day I need to be better at it.
Of all of those tips, I think the mattress is the most important one! We had a worn out mattress and when we replaced it, our lives improved dramatically. Not only are we better rested, but we also don’t have as many aches and pains in the morning.
Having a mattress that doesn’t work for you is such an awful thing isn’t it – I’ve had some bad ones in the past.
all very good tips! there’s also studies that show stopping screen time at least 30 minutes before bed helps. something about the light interferes with sleep apparently! x
Yes! Blue light is awful a lot of devices you can now turn it off, if you still want screen time. Although being away from it completely is obviously the best.
I really need to try silk pillow cases!! I haven’t tried them but know people say they make a big difference to their skin and their hair!
Ohh I hope you manage to get hold of one and it does help you 😀
It’s so important to me to have a nighttime routine. Taking my makeup off is a must-do for me.
It can be so bad on your skin if you leave it on, but I understand why it can seem like a lot of effort at times.
Having a good night’s sleep is very important in my book. I make sure to wash my face and put on moisturizer before going to bed. Great tips!
I think it can help you get to sleep as well if you have followed your routine and got it all done.
These are all wonderful beauty tips to keep my mind. I go through a five step process each morning, but need to make my nightly routine more of a priority.
Oh wow it sounds like you have a routine going in the morning. Good luck with getting a nightly one done.
Thank you for sharing this, I will have to take your tips to heart. I usually try to apply a good moisturizer at night, but I need to try sleeping with a face mask. I think this will help me get a better night sleep.
I have a cream at the moment which is called an overnight face mask and it is amazing.
Great tips. A comfortable bed, pillow, and blanket are my best sleep items. Every night I am thankful for my sleep.
I am with you on this – if your bed or pillow are uncomfortable you just don’t sleep well.
Fantastic tips, I love a warm bath and always make sure I take off all my makeup with wipes & cleanser before bed. xxx
Taking your make up is such a big thing isn’t it – it can feel like a chore but it is a must for all skin types.
I like to put on foot cream last thing before I go to sleep, but I cannot wear socks in bed, my feet get far too hot!
The soaks just help the cream last long as it’s locked in 🙂
This sounds like a great night time routine and it is making me feel like I should be doing more for my face. We all value our looks so I will at least try a good face cream to replenish my skin at night.
That is so true, it is so easy to not do it though isn’t it.
My husband always laughs at how many things I need to do before I’m ready to lie down for the night. This great list is an example of all the things us girls need to do, and I do most of everything you listed.
It is amazing how long it can take to put all your creams on – well worth it though.
It’s funny for me I really do not have a bedtime routine. I get up and brush my teeth laydown and go to sleep LOL. I should probably wash my face every night. I think you have some great tips and I might just follow a few of these myself.
I hope it helps you bring a bit more to your routine, but I guess if yours already works for you why change it.
These are great tips I need to make time for baths. Only problem is when I am going to bed my baby decides to wake up and scream nonstop. I should also remember handcream because my hands tend to be crusty all the time.
Aww bless. I hope you get some calmer nighttimes at some point.
I need a better routine, that’s for sure. I am working on it. And I am looking into getting a silk pillowcase.
Good luck I hope you manage to your routine sorted and you love your silk pillowcase.
I do everything but sleep on the silk. Tried it several times just can’t get a good nights sleep. Just keep sliding around and my head slides off the pillow.
I can totally imagine for some the silk pillowcase just wouldn’t work for that very reason.
I always wash my face and moisturize before going to bed. Getting a good night’s sleep is also essential. I like it on the cooler side when I sleep, snuggled under a comfy blanket.
It really is, our bodies need to sleep and without it, it can make us just feel awful.
Great tips and I like to add some essential oils and epsom salt to my tub bath. Sleep is so important to have a good next day!
It is amazing what you can up with some Epsom salt and essential oils isn’t it.
