7 Ways to Keep Your Hair Healthy
Having healthy and vibrant hair is something that most people strive for. And it’s no surprise as to why! A healthy head doesn’t just look good, but it boosts your confidence and gives you a sense of well-being.
Between trying to preserve your current health and looking to improve it, or even exploring options for hair regrowth, there are several things that you can do to keep your locks looking their best. In fact, we’ve put seven things down into a list so that you can keep your hair healthy.
You are what you eat.
Food is not medicine, but you’ll find that a lot of the things that your body needs do come from food. If you want to encourage hair regrowth after a period of hair thinning, then you need to start from the inside out. Your diet plays a big role in the health of your hair, and eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, will ensure that your hair follicles receive the nutrients that they need. This can include biotin which is found in eggs, nuts, and avocados, vitamin E, which is present in spinach and sunflower seeds, and iron, found in lean meats and proteins.

Turn down the heat.
Excessive use of heat styling tools like curling irons, Flat irons, and blow dryers can really cause damage to your hair. The high temperatures work to strip moisture from the hair shaft and that makes it more prone to breakage, dryness, and split ends. Limiting the use of heat styling tools just as special occasions rather than everyday use can help. If you must use a heat styling tool then use heat protection spray.
Be gentle with your hair care.
Avoiding harsh brushing, especially when your hair is wet, is important. Your hair is more susceptible to breakage if you brush it harshly. A wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush can help you to work through the knots gently so start from the tips and work your way to the root. This minimises any pulling on the hair and scalp. When you put your hair up, try to avoid any tight hairstyles like ponytails or braids. Opt instead, for looser styles that allow you I had to move more freely.
Go for a scalp massage.
You can do this yourself in the shower, but it’s always so much nicer when somebody else does it for you. Massaging your scalp could help to improve the blood flow to the hair follicles and that encourages hair regrowth and nourishment. It’s also going to be great as a stress reliever, which is an unknown contributor to hair loss. Incorporating a scalp massage and your hair care routine while shampooing or conditioning can also help. Using your fingertips to massage the scalp slowly and gently, you can improve your hair growth levels. You can also use oils like coconut or argan oil to nourish the scalp and hair follicles and improve circulation.
But keep in mind, this does keep your current hair healthy; it doesn’t really guarantee that you won’t lose any hair (aging and genetics do play a factor). So it might be best to keep an open mind and know about hair transplant costs, because this could technically save you a lot of stress and money in the long run, especially if you’re dealing with hair thinning and hair loss that’s beyond your control.

Hydrate and moisturise where you can.
Just like your skin, your hair needs hydration for it to stay healthy. Dry hair is going to break, split, and look dull. To prevent this from happening, you should make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water every day. Using moisturising shampoos and products such as leave-in conditioners and hydrating masks can help to lock in moisture and keep your hair shinier for longer. If your hair is dry or damaged, then incorporating deep conditioning treatment into your routine once or twice a week can help to restore moisture and vitality to your hair.
Protect your hair from the sun.
If you want to protect your hair from heat styling tools, you need to make sure that too much exposure to the sun is not happening. UV rays can break down the proteins in your hair leading to dryness, damage, and discolouration. Wind and harsh weather conditions can also do the same thing. Wearing a hat or scarf when spending extended periods in the sun is important. Slap on a hat and make sure that you’re using hair products that offer UV protection. Your scalp and your hair is just as important as the rest of your skin.
Consider professional treatments. When it comes to hair regrowth, products like minoxidil which stimulates hair follicles, and finasteride which helps prevent further hair loss, are commonly used treatments. Speak to your doctor and go and see a dermatologist to see exactly what could be causing your hairloss before making any drastic changes.
