5 ways to Stay Stylish on a Long Haul Flight
var noskim = ‘true’;
Whether you have a backpacking adventure planned in Thailand, exploring the islands and temples and partying in the moonlight or are taking a wild road trip around the US, you have a long journey ahead of you before you even land in that final destination.
A direct, long-haul flight is pretty taxing. It dries out your skin, requires you to sit in the same position for hours on end and you’ll likely be limited on space, therefore you might need some tips on how to stay comfortable but still look stylish at the same time. Here’s how:
The right cover up
As well as that complimentary blanket some airlines provide, it’s a good idea to carry a lightweight jacket to avoid the chill of the air con, while on that plane for 6+ hours. Take some style inspiration from the pilot and throw on a men’s Harrington jacket, inspired by aviator bomber styles and comfy enough to wear throughout the whole flight. Opt for a suede material which should see you off the plane and can even be worn on cooler nights out, thrown over a fitted t-shirt and jeans.
Sunglasses
“Sunglasses, indoors? Isn’t that the biggest fashion no-no, ever?” you ask. Well, if you didn’t get your hands on an eye mask before hopping on the plane, then this is the next best thing. Plus, nothing says ‘rockstar’ like napping in your shades, as if nursing a monster hangover from a wild night before when in reality you’re just exhausted from getting up early for your 4 am flight.
Baseball caps
This headwear is having a moment again in 2017 and is the perfect accessory for any long haul flight as it shades the eyes and still looks good – perfect for teaming with those shades. Look for a style featuring embroidery to tap into the current trend, affectionately referred to as ‘dad hats’, and available to pick up from independent designers on sites such as Etsy. This style of hat is of course also perfect for the beach or when exploring a foreign food market in the midday sun, while on your travels.
Slip on shoes
Forget the high tops for a long haul flight, you need plenty of wiggle room when it comes to footwear and that’s why slip on shoes are a good idea. While we don’t recommend you remove them completely – think of your other passengers – it’s a good idea to be able to slip your foot in and out and have free movement of your ankle. Look for slip-on skate style shoes in checkered designs or snakeskin prints if you like a retro vibe or opt for slipper style loafers to complement any outfit.
Tiny toiletries
Stock up on those mini sample aftershaves, chewable toothbrushes and face moisturiser and make a point of using these mid-flight. Dab a tiny amount of aftershave onto your neck to avoid upsetting other passengers in the confined space and when your skin starts to feel lizard-like from the same recirculated air five hours into your flight rub some moisturiser on your face, focusing on your eyes and cheeks.
So, now you know how to stay stylish on that next long haul trip out of the country it’s time to apply these tips to look good and feel fresh on that plane. Have a great flight.

Slip on shoes are really a good idea when travelling for a long time on a plane. I have flown to nz and back a few times and it’s a long flight and your tips would sure come in handy.
I can honestly say I have never heard of “dad hats” LOL
I checked out the links to see what exactly they were and I was quickly reminded. I guess on a long haul, for me, I could care less what someone else thinks about my level of comfort (but then again, I guess that applies no matter what I’m doing) lol
You definitely underestimate how cold it gets on the plane when you’re just thinking about going to a hot country! I usually take a kimono to put over my legs.
I always wear slip on shoes, but I did not think of bring tiny toiletries on board. That is a great idea!
Fabulous tips here! I love the idea of the sunglasses, but the slip on shoe tip is even more ingenious and much better for movement too. Can’t wait for my next long flight to try them out x
Good post. I always feel disheveled after long flights.
Good tips. I have never heard of chewable toothbrushes. I will have to look into them.
Good comfy shoes are my first thing for long flights, many times it also means wandering airports so they are a priority.
I usually wear glasses and hates. Both are comfortable and make me feel a little more secure.
Great advice. I most of the time don’t care what I look like when I fly, but I need to keep this in mind.
Sunglasses and slip-ons have always been my trick. I am glad to see those two made your list!
Great ideas, thank you! It’s so worth all the fiddling about decanting toiletries or hunting down their tiny versions; it can make you feel so much better to have them to hand while travelling.
I do love slip on shoes when flying. Not only do they make getting through TSA so much faster, but they are easier to slip off during the flight.
I love these tips. Sunglasses are a must have for me! However, it’s more of a benefit for me than it is a fashion accessory since I have photophobia (eyes are sensitive to light) and my eyes are prone to dryness.
I have to admit I find sunglasses are a must since I’ve worn contacts as everything seems a whole lot brighter.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve had a LOOOONNGGG flight… but your list will sure come in handy for the next time I take an adventure : )
I hope the next adventure you take, takes you amazing places.
These are all great ways to stay stylish on a long haul flight. Falling asleep wearing shades – I’ve done that, but I did not feel like a rock star. Anyway, thanks for the tips! These tips will ensure we reach our destinations pretty and refreshed.
Hahah I have to admit I often just feel like I’ve smooched any glasses up if I fall asleep in them.
This is a great list of things to bring with you on a plane. I never thought about bringing toiletries, but I do always bring an extra change of clothes.
It’s a nice way to help you feel refreshed after a long trip.
Such great ideas! I havent been on a plane since i was 8, and know next time i do I am sure it will be a long flight!
I hope you have an amazing time where ever your next trip takes you.
These are all great ideas. I think slip on shoes are a must. They’re comfy and so much easier to put on.

I love to travel but I hate long haul flights. These tips will definitely keep you from feeling like crap before or after going down the plane! I always keep a small bottle of facial wash and moisturizer with me.
Long haul flights can be a bummer and it’s good to have toiletries and beauty products with you to help you stay fresh and look fresh! I think these are great tips!
I have always found it difficult to find comfortable, yet stylish clothes to travel in. I mean on a long flight you are usually cramped into a plane so you try to be as comfortable as possible. Comfort doesn’t mean drab though and you have certainly showed me how to travel in style! Thank you!
I need comfort on flights so something like a loose jumpsuit and some comfy slip ons would be a great idea. I like the idea of wearing sunnies as well x
These are great tips! For me comfort comes first when traveling, but it’s also nice to still look stylish!
I am not planning any long plane trips but this was a very useful and fun post. It applies to any long journey even in a car.

These are great tips! One of my musts is baby wipes. Freshening up, cleaning sticky fingers or just cleaning up after a long day, they work wonders!
Flying is tough enough as it is. There’s no need to be more uncomfortable than you are already going to be while on the flight. I agree with your suggestions, all of them.
I always wear slip on shoes when I travel. They are just more comfortable. I honestly am not one to worry about being stylish when I am traveling.
As long as you are comfortable that is all that matters 🙂

Comfortable shoes are the biggest must have on an airplane. Even if you have to pack a pair of shoes just for an airplane, your feet have to be comfortable. I love wearing ballet flats on an airplane because it’s easy to change shoes when you arrive at your destination.
Ballet flats are perfect as they can look nice as well as being so comfortable as well.
Slip on shoes are a must on any long flight, in my opinion. I need to let those puppies breath when I’m at 30,000 feet.

I am all about the comfy shoes when traveling and the tiny toiletries. I do not like feel uncomfortable when on the road or flying, and tiny toiletries means more room in your bag for fun stuff. I also love covering up to feel warm on a trip. Being cold while in transit is no fun at all since you have to sit still.
Tiny toiletries are a must aren’t they – if you have the right ones they can really help you feel fresh as you travel.
I travel in leggings and flip flops. I like to be comfy when I fly and it doesn’t get more comfy than that 🙂
Ohh hadn’t thought of flip flops they would really let your feet breath.
