15 Cosy Autumn Rituals to Try This Year
Autumn can be a hard change from the bright and sunny long days of summer, what with the days getting shorter, the weather colder, and everything feeling a little darker. However, it can be the perfect season to pause, get cosy, and soak up the little things that make this time of year so special.
If you are looking to soak up some new ways to enjoy autumn, then here are 15 cosy autumn rituals to try this year. I’ve tried to make sure they are all simple, budget-friendly ideas which can help you move into the season and create a little everyday magic.
Light All the Candles

From spiced pumpkin to smoky vanilla, autumn is candle season. Scatter them across shelves and tables to add instant warmth and glow. It really can help you add a wonderful ambience to your home.
Go on a Foraging Walk
Look to gather things like conkers, acorns, colourful leaves, or even blackberries. Back home, you can use them to make your own autumnal display or even a delicious blackberry pie!
Build a Cosy Nook
Need somewhere cosy in your home to snuggle up with a cup of tea, book or your journal? Then think of piling up cushions, blankets, and adding soft lighting to a corner of your home.
Create a Seasonal Drinks Ritual
Swap your usual cuppa for something a bit more autumnal, spiced chai, hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, or homemade apple cider.
Dig Out Your Comfy Layers
Oversized jumpers, chunky scarves, fluffy socks, “cosy wardrobe” season is here, so embrace it with open arms.
Start a Slow Evening Routine
Dim the lights, make a warm drink, and swap endless scrolling for something you enjoy: a book, journaling, or a feel-good playlist.
Collect Autumn Scents
Fill your home with seasonal fragrances such as cinnamon, cloves, and orange slices for a homemade autumn “potpourri.”
Host a Low-Key Movie Night
No fuss needed, just a blanket, snacks, and something nostalgic. Bonus points for an early 2000s rom-com or a Studio Ghibli favourite (My Neighbour Totoro is a must).
Bake Something Comforting
Try a simple apple crumble, banana bread, or spiced muffins. Your kitchen will smell incredible, and you get a tasty treat at the end.
Bring Nature Indoors

Add dried flowers, tiny pumpkins, or a trailing houseplant to your space. It can help to make everything feel instantly softer and more seasonal.
Make Something by Hand
Autumn is perfect for slow, mindful crafts, think of things like: knitting, colouring, scrapbooking, or painting a few postcards to send to friends.
Capture the Season
Take photos of crunchy leaves, misty mornings, or your favourite cosy corners. Future-you will thank you when January feels grey.
Declutter Before Winter
Pick one drawer, one shelf, or one wardrobe. Clearing space now makes room for the new season’s energy (and maybe a fluffy jumper or two).
Switch Up Your Décor
Swap out summery cushions and prints for richer tones, knitted textures, and warm lighting. It doesn’t have to cost much, think charity shop finds and budget-friendly swaps.
Create a “Little Joys” List

Write down 5–10 tiny things that make you happy about autumn, it could be: hot chocolate, early sunsets, wearing your favourite boots and tick them off one by one.
Final Thought
Autumn is all about slowing down after a busy summer, leaning into comfort, and celebrating the little things.
So why not pick a few of these rituals and make them yours?

I can’t get enough of candles this year. What a great list. I’d also like to try a Spiced Chai and I’ve been opting for hot chocolate mocha with marshmallows as a treat after a long cold walk.
Do you have a favourite scent of candles you are liking this year?
I love to crochet, but during the summer it’s a little hot on your lap. Autumn evenings are a perfect time to settle down and crochet a heavy, snuggly blanket.
Ohh have you made yourself a blanket? I always think crochet things look absolutely incredible.
don’t really care about seasons, I am retired so mooch around all year
Do you not find that some seasons bring different things to do, like winter its harder to get out and about and sometimes summer too with the heat?
I love the idea of the Low-Key Movie Night
Honestly they are really nice – just gives you something fun without to much set up.
I love baking and there has been a glut of apples and blackberries and been enjoying baking crumbles and chutneys
Ohh I bet those are so delivious – love a homemade crumble.
This list is brilliant (as usual). I want to organise something special for the twelve days of Christmas (Dec25 to Jan5) and some of these ideas will fit the bill nicely.
Oh that is amazing! I am so glad it has helped give you some ideas.
having the candles on more as the evenings darken
I’m the same autumn comes around and I want those candles on.
