Why You Should Visit Santorini In The Winter

When you think about a holiday to Greece, you most likely imagine yourself jetting off at the height of summer – July or August – when the sea is warm, the crowds are growing and the streets are alive with people. Thanks to Santorini opening its doors to winter tourism in 2015, it’s now easier than ever to have a winter holiday on this romantic island. But why should you and what should you expect? Here are a few reasons why winter is the perfect time to visit Santorini:

The Weather

Santorini benefits from pretty glorious weather all year round. Whilst July and August temperatures can be almost unbearably hot, the winter months of September (24°C), October (21°C) and November (17°C) are still warm enough you’d think it was still summer.

The same goes in February and March when the weather starts to get hotter as summer approaches. Keep in mind that the chance of rain is higher from November through to January, so you may get some wet days.

The Crowds

Santorini is notorious for its crowds. Given the small size of the island, Santorini can become easily crowded, making it difficult to enjoy the island’s beauty. Numerous cruise ships frequent the island from the very beginning of summer to the very end, which can bring some 10,000 people a day – although the limit has recently been reduced to 8,000. You’ll find that come late September, the majority of the crowds have disappeared – a huge benefit of going in the winter months. Plus, you’ll feel like one of the locals!

Better Photo Opportunities

With smaller crowds, comes better photo opportunities – especially during sunset, when everyone is clambering, packed together, to get that all-famous sunset shot at Oia! With smaller crowds, you’ll get front row seats to the island’s best sightseeing spots. Time to get your own sunset shot, without including tons of people, or being pushed and shoved amongst the hustle and bustle.

It’s Cheaper

With off-peak season, you’ll find huge drops in price for accommodation and flights. For example, a room that costs under £100 a night in the winter is likely to be upwards of £300 in the summer! Food, drinks and transportation are likely to vary much less. Since Santorini opened for winter tourism, there are an increasing number of flights available – just be sure to check on comparison sites like Kayak for the best deals. So if you’re on a budget, it’s a no-brainer – you’re far better off visiting in the months of October or November.

Accommodation

There are now over 90 hotels staying open between November to March, as well as a number of restaurants and local shops. You can also rent one of the many private villas that remain available during the winter, at a hugely discounted price. You’re best off staying in Santorini’s capital, Fira, where the most businesses are likely to be open during the winter.

Food

Whilst most restaurants are closed during the winter months, there is enough open to get by. Places that are frequented by locals such as Karterados are likely to have more places open – as well as Fira. The best thing to do is to simply go out exploring and see what’s available. This is actually a far better way to discover Santorini, as you’ll be able to find all the hidden gems that you may never have found during the summer.

If you do opt to rent a private villa, you’ll have your own kitchen, so make the most of the local markets and food stores that are still open for the residents. You’ll be able to buy the freshest in local produce and cook your own Greek cuisine from the comfort of a home-away-from-home.

What To Do

There really isn’t too much difference between the activities available in summer Santorini and winter Santorini. The biggest difference you will find is that the public pools are closed for maintenance and the sea might be too cold to swim in, depending on what the weather is like that day.

One of the best ways to explore Santorini is by renting a car and driving across the island. Not only will a car suit you in all weathers, but also the prices are far cheaper, the roads are quieter, and you’ll be sure to find a parking space. Simply get in the car and see where your whim takes you, not having a stringent itinerary will make for a far more relaxing holiday too.

Hiking the Fira Trail is an absolute must for any visitor to Santorini. You’ll see some exceptional views along the way including the volcano, various churches and Thirassia Island before ending your hike in Oia.
