The Deflector by Nicole Liang: A Gripping New YA Fantasy You’ll Want to Binge

There’s something exciting about picking up a new novel, especially when it is the doorway to a new world you haven’t explored yet. The Deflector by Nicole Liang is the first book in The Gifted Trilogy, and looks to bring a fresh energy to the young adult fantasy genre.

So if you love stories with hidden identities, powerful abilities, and those “wait… WHAT?!” plot moments that have you turning the pages into the early hours, this one deserves a look at.

The Deflector

At the centre of the story is Akari, a sixteen-year-old who has spent most of her life trying to keep her head down espechially since she discovered her gift: the ability to deflect wounds. After escaping the Great Harvest, she fled the capital and built a quieter, simpler life in the outskirts.

The appearance of an Andelovian boy in Cheyvelenia disrupts everything Akari thought she’d left behind. Suddenly, her past doesn’t feel buried anymore; it feels like it’s right there. As secrets begin to unravel, Akari is drawn into a dangerous web of power struggles, enemies, friendship and love.

About the author: Nicole Liang

Nicole Liang has lived in four countries across three continents, and her background brings a really interesting sense of scope to her storytelling. Born and raised in Singapore, she completed her BA at Cornell University in New York, worked as a trader in Hong Kong, and later earned her MBA from London Business School.

Her multicultural experiences and love of romantic fantasy helped inspire The Deflector, which is her debut novel and the first in The Gifted Trilogy.

When she’s not writing, Nicole enjoys skiing, golfing, horse riding, practising yoga, playing the piano, dabbling in fashion, and spending time with her Shiba Inu, Tiara (who, by the sound of it, may be the true boss of the household).

Nicole splits her time between London, New York, and Singapore.
