Life Admin Tasks to Tackle This Winter
There is an old saying that typically relates to your financial situation: fix the roof while the sun is shining. But, this phrase could equally relate directly to the importance of getting important life admin done at the right time.
Now, with winter well and truly here, it can be easy to forget how some tasks are just simply harder to do once the cold weather hits us. It might literally be the case that you need to fix your roof – or more likely, there are plenty of things that can be hugely beneficial to do during winter.
Here, we take a look at some tasks that you should ideally prioritise this winter.
Manage your personal banking

Winter can be an expensive time of the year. Household bills rise as you use more electricity, gas and water. Christmas and other holidays are a heavy burden on your wallet. And, for some reason, everything from boilers and radiators to fridges and freezers seem to choose winter for when they break down.
So, before winter progresses even more, it’s a great idea to get your finances in check. That means really taking a close look at your personal banking. Are you getting the best deal possible from your banking products? Are your savings accounts still providing reasonable interest rates? And, do you have any unused cards? Now might be the time to close the accounts.
Winterise your vehicle
Getting your car ready for winter’s frost and cold weather is one of the most important things you can do. This could include everything from changing your tyres for those better equipped to deal with winter weather, to replacing fluids and ensuring there is antifreeze mixed in with the engine cooling system.
You might be surprised to learn that 24% of weather-related vehicle accidents are reported to take place due to bad weather, such as snow, sleet or ice – this really highlights just how important it is to ensure that your car is in the best possible shape to take on the elements.
Clean the gutters

Now is also the right time to get things done around the house. This is especially true of those things that become more of a pain to do as the weather worsens. Cleaning the gutters is a good example of this. It is important to have your gutters in good working order for the inclement weather of winter, especially after the autumn where falling leaves can notoriously clog things up.
Emptying the gutters of leaves, dirt and other detritus not only minimises the risk of flooding the house, or creating problems with damp, it can also stop the gutters themselves from being damaged.
Review your insurance
Many insurance policies renew in the new year, so taking the time before winter to thoroughly go over the details is a great idea. It can be easy to forget just how many insurance policies that you have taken out; you might have insurance for your car, home, contents, income protection and even life.
You should go over your policies and even try price comparison sites to see if you can find a better deal elsewhere. The last weeks of the year is also a great time to go over all of the information and make sure it is all up-to-date and accurate.
Update your CV
The new year can also be a time for thinking about the future and considering your options where you work. It could be worth taking the time before the end of the winter to get part of the admin out of the way – you can do this by updating your CV.
You might not think that much has changed, but consider what you have learned over the time since you last updated it. It may be that you have developed skills and knowledge that you just didn’t have before. This could be the way to discover the direction that your career should head in.
In conclusion
It’s always a good time to get more life admin done. Unfortunately, the winter doesn’t lend itself to getting a lot of things done – especially if they involve doing anything physical. However, it can be a great idea to take time out as soon as possible to address end-of-year tasks and finish off any home maintenance jobs that are sensitive to colder temperatures. The winter is, therefore, a sensible time to tick off a few key items from your life admin list before the year closes in and the chill factor accelerates!
