How Counsellors Help
It’s odd to think that for over half of my life I have now seen a counsellor on and off and I’ve had my share of good and bad ones.
One important thing to know when you are looking for a counsellor is if you rely on health insurance you have to know if they will pay out towards a therapist. This can be complex, but it is well worth making sure you know the ins and outs of your plan.
My Experiences with Counsellors.
To start with the good I remember fondly my first art therapist I think in many ways she, along with my art teacher while in hospital, probably got the most out of me as when it came to expressing my emotions, it was with craft and creativity, I did it best.
Then, in contrast, there was the one I was sent to see from the refuge, my lasting memory of her is her telling me I am unhelpable. In her words this was due to the fact I knew about the cycle of abuse, I knew the techniques that can help.
However, I was unable to apply them to myself. I left that last meeting with her crying and feeling lower than I had in a long time.
After all, surely they should be helping not putting you down.
Conclusion.
I guess it is all down personality and getting along with the person who is meant to be helping you. After all, you are not going to open up to someone you are unable to connect with.
Even if you know that you should, or at least I can’t. I just want to know that they are willing to try and understand.
I mean I know that often my feelings, thoughts and way I can act are odd.
Hello, I’ve lived with myself for a long time now.
I don’t need a counsellor to tell me that.
I need them to help me deal with those things when I can’t and to help me put in place strategies that make life just a little bit easier to live with.
I have a whole lot of admiration for counsellors and their want to help other people, it must be hard to forget all the bad things you hear during the day.
So if you are a counsellor, then I thank you for the hard work you do, to help myself and others like me.
