Getting hitched is the event of a lifetime, whether it represents a solemn oath or a friends-and-family party for the ages. Though the number of people getting married each year is currently on the decline, there is still a huge amount of room for the occasion in the UK – and many of us are in the planning stages of our own! What are some simple preparation tips to make that planning a little easier?

Budget First

While financial matters are by no means the most romantic of matters, they are essential to figure out before anything else progresses with your wedding planning. This might not be a fun place to start, but it serves a crucial function; knowing your budget before you start means you won’t become unavoidably attached to expensive and unaffordable things, be they the venue, the food or even the dress.

In setting out exactly what money you have available for the ceremony and reception, you can partition it according to any general ideas you might have. From here, you’ll have a much clearer idea of what is and isn’t in budget.

The Rings

While quite literally small in comparison to other wedding planning elements, the rings are undoubtedly the most important physical part of your ceremony. They are tokens of your love and commitment to one another, and rings you will wear for the rest of your natural life together – as such, choosing your rings should be something done with care and reverence.

Further to this, your planning should incorporate the placing of both rings in the care of someone you truly trust. This is traditionally the best man, but if a family member is better suited to hang onto them then trust your instinct!

The Itinerary

With the rings and budget sorted early, you can turn your focus to the rest of your wedding – something that can be made much easier by drafting up an itinerary for both the coming weeks and the wedding itself. A ‘planning itinerary’ can keep you and your wedding planner on track with milestones, such as securing catering and your venue.

More importantly, though, the itinerary of the day itself is nothing short of essential to the smooth running of the day. This isn’t something that should be drafted and overseen alone; you should build a team of family and friends to make sure nothing clashes, and that everything is in hand.

The Little Things

Speaking of which, the little things can often slip through the cracks, and – while not vital to the success of your wedding day – can nonetheless be that little missing thing that dampens your celebrations. Such little things might be a guest- or photo-book for your attendees, or accoutrements for the dining tables. Again, responsibility for these could be given over to a trusted friend to ensure everything goes off without a hitch.
