Cheap (But Thoughtful) Gift Ideas for Every Occasion

You don’t need a big budget to give a good gift. No matter if it’s for a birthday, anniversary, thank you, or just because, the most memorable presents are often the ones packed with meaning, not price tags.

So if you are on a budget but want to give something that might warm a heart, here’s a little list of gift ideas that might be perfect for the occasion.

1. A Handwritten Letter or Card

An open greeting card with a red heart at the top, reading Dear Friend, followed by three blank lines, resting on a brown wooden surface with a matching brown envelope underneath.

Old-school, heartfelt, and free, a proper letter never goes out of style. You could even look to add little doodles, pressed flowers, or a silly poem.

2. A “Cosy Night In” Kit

Build a bundle with night in favourites such as a teabag or hot chocolate sachet, a pair of fuzzy socks, and a tiny candle. Tie it all up with a ribbon and some paper or pop it in a reusable jar or mug.

3. A Mini Memory Scrapbook

Spend some time going through shared moments and print out a few favourite photos, and add them to a scrapbook with fun captions or little inside jokes. Even just 5–10 pages can make someone teary in the best way.

4. A Baby Plant

Propagate a spider plant, pothos, or succulent, then gift it in a cute reused pot or charity shop teacup. Low cost and high love.

5. Something You Baked

Biscuits, brownies, or banana bread all say, “I care.” Wrap in parchment paper and twine for the perfect homemade bake gift. 

6. A DIY Pamper Kit

One of my favourite ideas is to put together a home DIY pamper kit – think face mask, bath salts, or a homemade sugar scrub in a little jar. Add a kind note that says, “You deserve a break.”

7. A Pre-Loved Book You Loved

Write why you chose it on a sticky note inside the front cover. Or wrap it up in paper and write a cryptic description on the front.

8. A Jar of Kind Words

Think of 10–20 little compliments, memories, or uplifting messages and write them down on paper, then fold them up and pop them in a jar or box to be revealed when needed. 

9. A Tiny Handmade Something

Add a tiny bit of personalisation to an item, from a cross-stitch bookmark to their initials on a handkerchief or a shrink-plastic keyring. Remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect; imperfection can often add charm.

10. Something Useful, But Cute

A beige mug with a simple cat face illustration sits on a wooden coaster next to a beige tote bag and a matching pouch, both featuring an orange carrot with green leaves. The items are on a brown surface.

Think a fun tote bag, a novelty mug, or a mini multi-tool, things they’ll use often, but with a personal twist, perhaps personalised or in a theme they love.

Final Thought

The best gifts often don’t cost a lot; instead, they are given to us with thought, time, and effort having been put into them.

  4. A pre-loved coat from my friend. My friend had a beautiful fluffy coat, which I always commented on how I loved it and wish they did it in my size. I lost some weight and a lot of my clothes were getting a bit big. My friend invited me over for a cupper and gave me her lovely fluffy coat which now fits me. It was so thoughtful.

  12. I got a Build a Bear teddy, dressed in his pyjamas and dressing gown, and when I changed his clothes I found a Gucci watch on his arm, my partner had been patient waiting for me to find it, and had been amazed I was happy with just the teddy (as I thought!)

  14. My baby nephew would love the little elephant! I’m a baker so usually whip up some surprise treat for my loved ones, or if they’re under the weather ill go take them a little goody bag of their fave treats, some teabags, cute mug & a good book – usually from the charity shop 🙂

  17. Years ago my friend and her husband bought me an ipod and downloaded loads of my favourite songs to it. It was such a lovely gift! Now you could curate a spotify list.

  27. Lovely ideas. My go to gifts for friends and family are my home baking, iced buns or lemon drizzle cake are always welcome, as are my jars of homemade jam or chutney. My favourite gift of all time has to be my engagement ring
