A Rabbit’s Life with Rabbit Retail

With Easter just past us, I was talking to the lovely Anna of Rabbit Retail and we thought it would be a great time to speak about just how much care and attention a rabbit needs in their life.

Once upon a time, they were thought to live OK down the bottom of the garden in a hutch without a friend, however, this is far from what a rabbit needs.

What a Rabbit Needs

Rabbits are a popular family pet, and with a life span of 8-12 years, they are a major commitment. However, not many people realise just how much space they need and how much care they take.

According to the PDSA depending on a rabbit’s size they need at least 3mx2mx1m/10ftx6ftx3ft as a bare minimum and it should allow them to be able to: run around, jump as high as they want, lie down and fully stretch out and stand up on their back legs without their ears touching the top.

However, a shelter/hutch that meets those requirements isn’t enough, a rabbit also needs: an area to exercise, outdoor space, a companion (or two), toys, enrichment, dry and clean bedding, a litter tray and at least one water bowl per rabbit.

In reality, a rabbit needs a space of at least 60 square feet to live within – however, it is a matter of the more the better.

That’s without thinking about food and health care needs such as yearly check ups, injections and health care issues which can be prevalent in rabbits.

Anna has had bunnies in her life for many years now and has wanted them for a whole lot longer. She, as well as many of us, wasn’t quite prepared when she took her first step into rabbit ownership, however in the years since she has honed her knowledge and become a true crazy rabbit lady.

It was on the back of both her love for rabbits and the knowledge she gained that she started an online shop amid COVID, a shop where you could be sure that all the food sold contained only good ingredients for rabbits free from harmful ingredients, dyes or additives while their toys use no glue or toxic dyes.

She is also always ready and willing to help impart her knowledge to new rabbit owners, helping them cross hurdles and work out rabbit parentship in the easiest possible way.

One of the biggest takeaways at this time of year is rabbits take up time, energy, money, space and heart. They are a big but wonderful commitment, that needs research before you hop into getting them.

  1. Aw I used to have two Dwarf rabbits called Snowflake and Smokey, they were super cute but hard to clip their nails and they kept getting eye infections which caused so many trips to the vets but they were adorable.

  2. Reminds me of our pet rabbit that we named after Peter Rabbit’s Cousin – Benjamin or Benji for short. He was a bit of an escape artist; gnawed his way out of his hutch. Slipped under the gate a couple of times…

  3. I absolutely love rabbits, I had a beautiful rabbit once named Dominic but he loved escaping and one day our next door neighbour found Dominic eating the plants in his greenhouse and was far from happy – Ooooops!!!!

  8. I love the bunny plush toy ,our house bunny pumpkin has a favourite toy which is a black and white toy dog ,he picks her before he has a nap and carries it around with him ,its looking a little worn now but pretty sure pumpkin won’t give it up easily

  10. Lop ear bunny plush, it is my favourite because it reminds me of the lop ear bunny I had when I was a teenager. His name was Sam and he was the cutest gentlest soul.

  50. Our pet rabbit as a child used to escape the run and mate with local wild rabbits. The wild rabbit population near us was made up of these enormous hybrid wild/pets, and they gradually gor smaller after Herman passed away!

  77. My favourite is the bunny stacking toy and the pop up castle which look absolutely fantastic, such a fun way for bunnes to play, explore, keep their brains stimulated and enrich their learning to prevent them becoming bored

As a fellow bun mum and someone who went to Anna’s store when it was upstairs above the eco store, it was so refreshing to see a store that REALLY cares about animals and is passionate like myself. My favourite product is the Science selective pellets as they’ve kept many of our buns happy and healthy. But I do love Hannah Dale’s artwork which they have stock lots of different stock of.
