Around the World in One Buffet – Cosmo Derby Review!

AD – We were invited to Cosmo Derby for two free meals.

Have you ever stared at a menu and wished you didn’t have to choose just one thing? Yep—same. That’s Have you ever stared at a menu and wished you didn’t have to choose just one thing? Yep same. That’s why Cosmo Derby instantly had my attention. It’s a passport to a plate-hopping adventure, and spoiler alert: it’s brilliant.

First Impressions of Cosmo in Derby

Found on London Road in Derby, this Cosmo is set in a beautiful art deco building and from the second you step inside, it’s clear this isn’t your average buffet. Rows and rows of fresh dishes just wait for you to dive in, and you can even pick something and watch it be made right in front of you by the chef! The layout makes it easy to wander around and pick your favourites (or, if you’re like me, a bit of everything).

Fancy sushi? Done. Craving a curry? Sorted. Can’t say no to a Yorkshire pud? Grab one! It’s all self-service, so you can follow one cuisine or go full-on food mash-up mode. Zero judgement here. They even offer a square plate with 4 sections to make mix and match even easier! Plus, you can keep on going back up, which is something a bit different from some buffet restaurants out there. 

Taste Test of Cosmo Derby

The quality? Genuinely good. Everything looked well-presented and tasted just as good. Nothing felt like it had been sitting out too long or had skimped on flavour. I tried to be sensible with portions, but… who are we kidding? That dessert table had mini cakes. I mean, come on, you just have to try one of each. 

We all tried something different, with my parents opting for more of a traditional roast, while Ash and I had a mix of everything from pizza to prawns and noodles and curry and more! All rounded up with pudding of mini cakes, fruit and ice cream. 

Table Service with a Smile

Even though the food is self-serve, drinks are brought to your table, and the staff were lovely. Friendly, efficient, and there when you needed them without hovering awkwardly. No pretentious vibes, just good service and a warm atmosphere that made the whole experience even better.

What’s more, if they didn’t know the answer to a question, they quickly made sure to find out from someone else. 

It’s worth noting that soft drinks such as cola are available as a refill, as is tea, while other drinks, including cocktails and mocktails, are pay per drink 

A particular shout out to our server, and I think it was the manager at the door after, when I was trying to get a good photo, and he came to give me some to use, which is so kind. I wish I had got their names. In case you see this, please let me know so I can add them, as alongside the food, you really made this somewhere we would return to, so thank you. 

Accessibility Note (Because It’s Worth Mentioning)

Now, this isn’t the focus of the visit, but if you’re a fellow wheelchair user, you might’ve noticed that some sites say Cosmo Derby isn’t accessible, however, the official website says that all sites are accessible, so I took the chance anyway, and guess what? No issues at all.

There’s a side entrance, a couple of feet from the main stepped entrance that gets you in easily and takes you directly to the restaurant, so no worries about being slipped in the back through a store room. What’s more, the accessible toilet has plenty of space to turn around.

They seemed to have one booth set up to be specifically wheelchair accessible as it led directly down the main concourse into the food area, as such it might be an idea to pre-warn them you are coming, however, I’m sure either way they will find somewhere to suit. 

Final Thoughts: Is The Cosmo Derby Restaurant Worth the Trip 

Would I go back? In a heartbeat. There’s something really fun about choosing your own foodie adventure and enjoying good service alongside it. Whether you’re celebrating something or just fancy eating your way around the globe on a Tuesday, Cosmo Derby is well worth a visit.

Plus, with food starting at just £16.99 for a lunchtime on a Saturday or £19.99 for an evening meal Monday – Thursday (the highest price is £22.99 per person for food), you really can get your money’s worth with this all-you-can-eat.
