Did you know that Helly Hansen has a history dating back over 140 years? It all started back in 1877 when a sea captain, Helly Juell Hansen, found a better way to protect himself from the harsh Norwegian elements.
Soon after, Captain Hansen and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou’westers and tarpaulins, which were made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil. They won their first award just a year later in 1878 at the World Expo in Paris.
Today Helly Hansen is the #1 brand for skiing, well-regarded in the sailing world as well and used as workwear on many sites.
Men’s Traverse HellyTech® Waterproof Hiking Shoes
My mum and dad do a lot of walking and like to make sure they have good shoes to help with that. So with my dad’s boots getting worn and tatty and him having had a mandibular reconstruction by fibula graft only last year this seemed the perfect occasion to get him kitted out in some good hiking shoes.
After being contacted by Helly Hansen I sent over the details to my parents, who had to decide who got the item between them. They had of course both heard the name, but more as a market leader in outdoor and extreme weather clothing. So they were intrigued to find out they offered hiking shoes.
My dad was pleased to find they can offer half sizes in at least some of their hiking shoes, which means he was able to order a pair that better fitted his feet compared to those offered in full sizes only.
The Traverse HellyTech® Waterproof Hiking Shoes have a huge number of features, which cover areas such as comfort, flex, waterproofing, fit, grip and the material they have been made from. For those who are interested in sustainability, these shoes are made using a lot of recycled material.
My Dad’s Thoughts
He had been looking for a while to find a replacement for his worn and tatty books, however, he was struggling to find some in which he felt happy and confident. When I first brought up Helly Hansen to him, he didn’t think it would be hiking boots he would end up with.
However, he quickly noticed they offered a high-quality and functional shoe such as he had been looking for.
He has found them to be very comfortable, alongside being waterproof, supportive and protective. Yet they have managed this without making them clunky.
So far he has tested them on mud, shale gravel and rocky surfaces, of which they grip well during use. As well as more everyday surfaces such as tarmac and concrete.
While he always goes for functionality over style, he feels that these boots have managed to tick the box in both arenas.
Overall, his words were “I love ’em” which I have to say is high praise indeed from my dad.

It’s so important to have supportive shoes for mountainous terrain!
At that price, these boots are a considered purchase but, really, the design and construction are amazing. They look pretty cool, too.
Definitely – my Dad isn’t one to splash out espechially on himself so it was high praise that he felt they were worth the cost, that and the fact he does feel weaker on oneside with out the fibula in one leg yet he felt confident in these. He and my Mum do walk a lot to keep themselves fit.
These look like a great pair of hiking boots, being waterproof is really useful especially in this country.
Definitely I think that’s a must have for any kind of walking / hiking shoe.
They sound like a great pair of hiking boots, and I like that Helly Hansen do half sizes, cause I also have one foot which is 5.5. I love walking and I love my walking boots, they’re so comfortable. Might think about getting a pair of these for my dad for Christmas.
I wish more companies did half sizes, it can be quite a difference at times when you have to go up and they just slid about a bit.

What is your must have feature for a pair of hiking boots?
Waterproof and half sizes are great features for a start. I personally look for arch support so I don’t need to change / add insoles
They also include the HH® Arch-Brace, HH® Max-Comfort Insole and HH® Free-Flex which are all to do with foot/arch support, honestly when I said the list of features was big there’s around 26 so well worth checking them all out on their website, I only just touched on them slightly in this post.
They look so sturdy and hard wearing from here!! I feel bad I have never heard of the brand but then again, I don’t do extreme sports or any sports in fact 😅. But for people who do walk a lot I do think it is so important to invest in good quality shoes that last a long time as in the end of the day, your feet are the ones supporting your whole body and helping you with posture. These Helly Hensen hiking shoes do look like the answer
Definitely I think if you are even just walking normal pavements you need to make sure you have shoes that are supportive. You can really hurt yourself just by walking a lot in unsupportive shoes.
Me and my husband love going for long walks. These boots sound ideal for my husband but just one query, are they very heavy as he has had boots in the past that feel like lead weights on his feet!
These are 1000g, as I said my Dad had a mandibular reconstruction by fibula graft last year and so he is missing his fibula on one side, and he says the don’t feel overly heavy and clunky.
