6 Quick Tips to Calm an Anxious Mind
Anxious thoughts can be overwhelming and make it hard for you to take action and make decisions. Anxious thoughts can be a growing obstacle to your productivity and well-being. Anyone can get anxious at some point in life. In some cases, it might not go away or even get worse over time. While there are various causes of anxiety, here are tips to help you calm down.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy uses essential oils or plant extracts for healing or cosmetic functions. When used to calm down an anxious mind, aromatherapy is administered through inhaling or absorption of these oils through the skin to bring out physiological effects.
Make sure that you dilute the essential oils as they come in their concentrated forms. Choose to inhale, use them on your skin, or distribute their scent in your home. To distribute the aroma in your home, use an oil burner or a diffuser. Put a few drops of oil on a cotton ball and leave it around your home.
You can also use essential oils as part of your massage either by yourself or with the help of a professional. Your choice of oils depends on what you wish to achieve. You can also choose to combine oil fragrances on one burner to boost your mood and improve sleep.
A Change in Scenery
The voice inside our heads is a contributor to happiness. Unfortunately, we hardly pay attention to it. As Think Aloud writes, anxiety isn’t your friend. It’s the nemesis that people go to many lengths to defeat, but somehow it always gets the best of you. When your thoughts and feelings seem out of control, one way to pull through is to get control over the environment..
Changing the scenery could mean clearing the clutter. Seeing order in your new world can be comforting and even make it easier for you to navigate and feel less anxious. When calming down an anxious mind, you will be more attracted to visual patterns or structured images; therefore, decluttering can make you happier, less upset, and less ashamed.

The Power of Touch
Scientifically, touch signifies trust and safety. A simple warm touch can calm cardiovascular stress, and activate your body’s vagus nerve responsible for your compassionate response.
Physical touch can increase the level of two neurotransmitters: dopamine and serotonin which regulate anxiety and stress and trigger your brain to offset feelings of anxiety.
You can also use squish balls to reduce stress. Squish balls are soft, round, and easy to squeeze, and you can find them in 29 different colours. Squeezing a stress ball stimulates and contracts your muscles and nerves making them stronger. The strength helps improve the overall nervous system and control stress levels.
Breath
Deep breathing can reduce anxiety and stress. Breathing slowly and deeply from your stomach signals your nervous system to calm down. While it can be an effective remedy to calming down an anxious mind, deep breathing takes practice and might not help you immediately.
Deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to your brain and stimulates the nervous system to promote a state of calmness. Deep breathing helps you feel more connected to your body and takes your mind away from the worries and quiets your mind.
Animals
Interacting with pets and other domesticated animals can help you calm down and reduce anxiety. The unconditional love from your pet can do more than keep you company. Pets can help reduce stress and improve the health of your heart.
Interacting with animals decreases the levels of a stress-related hormone called cortisol and lower blood pressure. Animals can also reduce loneliness, boost your mood, and increase the feeling of social support.
Music
Music can calm your nervous system as well as help you ease stress by influencing your biological processes. The tempo of the music you choose to listen to can automatically speed up or slow down your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing.
Upbeat music can make you feel optimistic about life. A slower tempo quiets your mind, relaxes your muscles, and releases stress. Music has a profound effect on your emotions and body, and the great news is that almost anybody can access music making it an easy stress reduction tool.
What to Avoid when Having Anxious Thoughts
While you can access several solutions to calming your anxious mind, avoid soothing your anxiety with things like stress eating which can result in more anxiety. Bringing back bad experiences, or imagining scary scenarios likely to happen can only heighten anxiety. The great news is that you can always work past all this by developing a new relationship with your thoughts.

Clutter definitely doesn’t help, a tidy place to live definitely makes me feel better. Great tips

When you mentioned change of scenery I immediately thought holiday. Sometimes I do I am a holiday junkie. It’s the only time I can have a long period of reduced anxiety and also feel excitement for the day. It’s definitely not long term solution but it still a nice break from every day anxiety.
I also learnt how stress balls work now. I always wonder how they reduced stress. I thought their purpose is to reduce anger by taking it out on the ball.
