7 Things to know Before Visiting Bermuda

A picture-perfect tropical paradise island almost lost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is a pretty special vacation destination. With stunning beaches, amazing scenery, and a vibrant, exciting nightlife, there are loads to love about this spot. There’s plenty about the island that will be familiar or expected, especially to experienced travellers, but there are a few surprises and unique elements that it’s worth knowing about before you visit. With that in mind, here are 7 things you need to know before travelling to Bermuda.

It can be expensive.

The cost of living in Bermuda is high. From eating out to groceries, food costs a bomb, and things like accommodation can be pricy too. While a Bermuda vacation is worth saving for, it will need you to splash out a bit, and watching your budget while you are there as much as possible is key.

Jellyfish can be a problem.

The infamous Portuguese Man ‘O War is often seen in the shallow waters surrounding the island, and they can dish out quite a sting. It is always worth asking about jellyfish warnings before hitting the beach.

No car rental.

Car rental is banned on Bermuda, to protect the infrastructure. But as the island is only 21 square miles, getting around by bike, scooter, or electric minicar is no hardship whatsoever!

Getting there is simple.

Despite a common misconception, Bermuda is not in the Caribbean, but in the North Atlantic, and surprisingly close to the East Coast. Cruises from Charleston visit Bermuda and Newport, while flights go direct from Boston and New York, and take just over two hours! You can also fly direct from the UK and mainland Europe.

Tap water is a no-no.

The tap water is usually untreated rainwater collected from the roof, so unless you want tummy troubles alongside your paradise vacation, stick to bottled water!

Travel insurance is a worthwhile investment

Bermudan medical care, while excellent, is incredibly expensive (often calculated as the second most expensive healthcare in the world!). While the chances of something going wrong are low, you don’t want to get stuck with a huge bill if the worst does happen.

There are pink sand beaches!

Saving the best until last – Bermuda boasts glorious, cotton-candy themed pink sand beaches, making for unbelievably beautiful photo opportunities, particularly at sunset. The colour is created by tiny invertebrates that live in Bermuda’s coral reefs, and these are some of the most extraordinary beaches in the world!
