Finding the Right Women’s Perfume
Scents are very closely linked to your memory and can have a huge impact on your emotional response to things too. After all, we all know that bacon or freshly mowed grass has a pretty positive impact on our senses!
However, this can mean that sometimes it’s really difficult to find the right women’s perfume to suit you because certain scents might remind you of something particular.
Finding your signature scent is a great feeling, but it can be a challenge.
Perfumes can become the very essence of your character, which is only a good thing if you get your scent right.
The difficulty is that many perfume descriptions can be confusing and filled with jargon that you might not be familiar with.
So, to understand how to find the right women’s perfume here is a guide to get you started!

Understand different notes
You will likely have heard perfumes being described with different ‘notes’.
This can help you determine the type of scent you are dealing with, which in turn can help you make a decision!
Perfume notes are split into three categories.
The top notes are the ones released first; these will form your first impression of the perfume. Top notes are the lightest and will start to fade to give way to the middle notes.
Middle notes of a perfume are the heart of the perfume, lasting longer and having a much stronger scent. Middle notes make up the main scent of the perfume. This is why it’s so important to give perfume a little while after spraying, before making a judgement!
Base notes are the final stage, comprising of the scents left when everything else has faded away. You will likely remember these notes more than the others!
How the three stages work together is what can make a unique, beautiful perfume to add to your collection.

Translate the different scents
Speaking of jargon, you have no doubt read a perfume description in the past and not fully understood what it means.
Terms such as ‘musk’ and ‘woody’ can often be unclear, and ultimately put you off buying certain perfumes.
Musk may not sound all that appealing, but it’s a popular choice for many perfumes because it has long-lasting properties.
It evokes a feeling of warmth and sensuality, with a smell that balances out many of the other notes in the perfume. It can sometimes remind you of a clean, laundry scent.
Woody, or earthy, are terms often used to describe perfumes that are based on fragrances from nature.
The likes of sandalwood and cedarwood can add creamy, spicy or sweet scents to a perfume depending on the type. These types of perfumes are ideal for the autumn and winter seasons.
Oriental fragrances are often reminiscent of powdery, spicy smells like cloves or nutmeg, but also of softer scents like orchids and jasmine.
Oriental inspired perfumes are great for year-round wear and can be reserved for the evening.
Citrus scents are probably quite self-explanatory; these are fragrances based on smells from limes, lemons and oranges. They are often very fresh and perfect for wearing in the day.

Choosing your signature scent
If you’re on the lookout for a new perfume, start with lighter scents and work your way through to heavier fragrances.
Pick up testers or smaller bottles and try them out.
Most of the time, finding your own scent is a result of trial and error.
Take a look at your existing perfume collection and decide if you want to buy a similar one, or go for something completely different!
