Why You Should Start Completing Your Bucket List Now
Ah…the bucket list! Most of us have a range of things we’d like to accomplish someday. From climbing mountains to more modest goals, there are so many things we’d like to do, our bucket lists can be extensive. One problem with these lists of things we want to do can be the delay getting started. People often see a bucket list as something they’ll only start accomplishing once they have retired.
There are many reasons why you should start checking items off your bucket list now. There is the obvious issue that waiting until retirement to begin completing items you’ve always dreamed of could be too late. Will you still be in good enough physical condition to climb that mountain or even manage a scenic hike of your dreams? There is no way to say. Although people are living longer than they did in the past, that doesn’t guarantee you a particular number of years of post-retirement adventure. It also doesn’t mean your health will remain as strong as your spirit of adventure.
Keep in mind that retirement may not even guarantee you unlimited amount of time to travel and check items off your bucket list. Right now you may think of those years as time you’ll be free to travel the world or have unlimited time to pursue your hobbies. In fact, as those years approach you might find yourself reluctant to spend great periods away from home because you won’t want to miss time with your grandchildren and other family. Perhaps by then, you will have retired only to start a new business or hobby that limits your time to spend on adventures. You might be helping to care for grandchildren during the day, thus limiting your time to spend on your other pursuits. Perhaps you will have become involved in a community project that requires considerable time and attention. All of these are great reasons why you should try to complete items on your bucket list now, instead of putting it off. Here are ways get started making your bucket list dreams come true.

Travel
Seeing different parts of the world is a top item on bucket lists. It could be the desire to travel the world or simply see a few specific locations. Keep in mind that many scenic locations are hard to reach so prioritize these bucket list items to do earlier in case you aren’t physically up to later.
There are a couple of ways to get started on your travel-related bucket list items.
- Make Holidays Count
Every weekend or annual time off from work can be chances to work on your bucket list. If budget is an issue, start out with less expensive destinations and leave the costlier ones for later. There might be places you want to see within a few hours of where you are now. Often we put those adventures off, even though they are well within our reach. Make your list of bucket list destinations and start planning how to make those trips happen. A week or two of annual leave from work or school could be the perfect time to travel to more distant locations. Look for economical travel options, take advantage of sales and package deals, or look into camping, home exchanges, or other ways to minimize your travel costs.
- Use Your Contacts
Accommodations can be costly and that expense can keep many bucket list travel destinations financially out of reach. One option is to look for opportunities to stay with friends and acquaintances. Look out for distant relatives, former classmates, and other contacts who live in or near one of your dream locations. Your social media contacts can be a wonderful way to stay in touch while you look for opportunities to visit your contacts in strategic locations. Staying with them could give you a chance to spend quality time together while you check more items off your bucket list. You can then return the favour by letting them stay with you when they want to travel to your area.
- Work with Your Career
There is no better way to see an area than by living there. Rather than simply looking at chances to visit, consider ways to spend more time near the places you want to visit. Search for opportunities to work or go to school in a different city or country from where you live now. Have you longed to trace your family’s roots in England? Consider options like the UK skilled migrant visa that could enable you to advance your career while you spend your free time exploring the country. Many countries are eager for skilled workers and so they have programs designed to make it easier for companies to hire employees they need from other elsewhere.
If you’re considering going back to school to get a degree, finding a school in a now distant location could be a great option. Even short continuing education classes could be a way to combine career enrichment with a chance to see places you’ve always wanted to visit. Take a closer look at business trips to see if there is a way to combine work travel with a stopover in a different city where you could complete items on your wish list.
Adventure
Does your bucket list include a number of challenging items? Anything requiring better physical condition should be done sooner rather than waiting for retirement. Many of these bucket list items could even been accomplished close to home. Chances to ride in a hot air balloon or drive a go cart could be only a short drive away and provide you with an exciting experience you’ll treasure forever.
Keep an eye out for chances to reach one of your goals. That upcoming business trip could be conveniently located next to a river where you could try white water rafting. A road trip to visit your in-laws could be a chance to stop by a tiki bar or historic site you’ve wanted to see. Your favourite musical group could be playing in a neighbouring city, only a short drive away. What’s one late night compared to the possibility that you may never have a chance to see them again?
Learning
Your desire to learn more doesn’t have to wait until you stop working full time. You can take scuba lessons now, try rock climbing at a local indoor centre, or beginning training for a marathon in your spare time without waiting for your kids to grow up or for your retirement to begin. Sign up for an evening class to learn a new language or study on your own online. These could be the first steps to accomplishing a bigger bucket list goal like scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef or separate items on your bucket list.
If you always hoped to start your own business or a second career, now could be the time to learn more. You might find that you liked the dream more than the reality of that new type of career. On the other hand, once you have the background or training you need, you might be able to start your new business now rather than waiting.
If affording classes is a problem, there could be other ways to keep learning. Check out volunteer opportunities in your area. They could provide chances to give back to your community while you learn home construction skills, practice a different language, or find out more about environmental causes. There are many ways you can learn as you volunteer without requiring a huge commitment in time or money. There is also a wealth of information available for free online to allow you to keep learning on your own.
Hobbies
A retirement spent writing a novel or creating artistic masterpieces might seem ideal. For other people, their bucket lists could include playing music or creating furniture. These dreams don’t need to wait until you stop your day job. You can start out small now by dedicating a few hours a week to pursuing your dream. It might not be the leisurely endless weeks spent on your hobby you imagined. That doesn’t mean you need to put off something you might enjoy when you could begin experiencing it now. Your hobby might remain a few precious hours stolen after the kids go to sleep at night or it could become a fun side business or new career.
Look for places to learn and pursue your hobby. Your community might offer evening classes that would give you a chance to learn, build your skills, and meet like-minded people. You can also look for training videos online or social media groups for people who share your interests. Even if your hobby is something you can’t really focus on now, finding others you enjoy the same hobbies can help to inspire you. Developing these contacts might be another way to find ways to spend time on your hobby while you still live your regular working life.
Life is short. It’s important to take the chances you have to enjoy life. Why spend all your time working until you retire when you could begin to create magical memories now and make the most of your life? By making life experiences a priority, you’ll enrich your life and leave room later for adding even more exciting items to your bucket list.
