Travelodge York review

When I was a child I used to love visiting places across the UK. I was actually a really bad traveller which made travelling overseas difficult and I don’t see that as a bad thing. There’s so much to see in this country so I’ve written this review of Travelodge York.

I have a huge love of history and the UK has so much to offer in that sense. I have always been fascinated by different civilisations and how our ancestors lived and so I adored the Jorvik Viking Centre in York when I was younger. When I heard that Travelodge were looking for people to review their newly updated rooms at Travelodge York Central how could I not say me please?!

I was really looking forward to re-visiting some of the places that I had discovered when I was younger and learning more about the vikings!

Perhaps one of the most important things to mention about York Central Travelodge is that there is no onsite parking, aside from two or three disabled spaces which are offered on a first come first served basis. These aren’t the easiest to get into due to being placed in the courtyard that is shared between Travelodge and the Wetherspoons next door.

For everyone else Travelodge works with Q-Park to offer 24 hours parking for £7 at their car park which is around eight minutes’ walk away. This isn’t a bad price for a city centre car park and you won’t need your car once you’re in York. You can, however, pull up outside the hotel and quickly drop off your luggage, so you don’t need to trek all the way from the car park to the hotel with it.

The hotel features a mix of family and double rooms, all of which have been updated with Travelodge’s new dreamer bed and fresh decor. I have to say that this king size bed is an absolute delight to sleep on. I often find nights away mean a lot of pain but I felt so comfortable and supported by the new dreamer bed offered in our room.

We were lucky enough to be given a room towards the rear of the building. Here the Travelodge overlooks the River Foss which meant that we got a lovely view to wake up to. The hotel itself is situated just 0.75 miles from the town centre so it’s a great base for exploring the city and it’s easy to get to all of the attractions that York has to offer. As previously stated, it is next door to a Wetherspoons and so we did get some noise until quite late at night. However, they do mention this on their website and so it was to be expected.

If you’re looking for a quieter stay then it might be worth looking a bit further away from the city centre.

For breakfast this particular Travelodge offers a choice of breakfast boxes which can be picked up from reception and taken back up to your room, or even take out for a picnic if the weather is good. They also put out unlimited tea, coffee and milk on the counter so you can help yourself as and when you fancy some.

Myself and Ash both thought the boxes offered a good selection of food, which helps set you up for the day. If you are staying for a while and eating out a lot then they offer a great alternative to yet another cooked breakfast. If you’re not hungry enough to eat it all at breakfast time, some of the items can be popped into your bag to snack on later during the day.

Getting to York city centre from the Travelodge is so simple. It really is just up the road and the hotel is only around a 10 minute walk from the Jorvik Viking Centre. Of course, this attraction was on our must visit list for the city.

However, if Jorvik isn’t your sort of thing then never fear, as there is so much you can do in York. From wandering around the shops in the historic Shambles to visiting some of the wonderful sights offered like York Minster and, if you’re brave enough, taking in a ghost walk or two.

Myself and Ash would definitely visit York again and when we do the Travelodge York Central hotel would most likely be our hotel of choice as it offers all the amenities you need within a great location. The rooms feature an en suite bathroom, tea and coffee making faculties, a TV and a very comfortable bed, all within a stone’s throw of the city centre and it doesn’t cost a fortune.
