10 Must-See Greek Hotspots
There’s something about Greece that makes it such a wonderful place to explore. From ancient ruins and fascinating historical sites to beautiful beaches and bustling cities, it’s a country with so much to discover.
Whether you’re planning your first Greek holiday or you’re lucky enough to have visited before, there’s always somewhere new to add to your list. And while the beaches and sunshine are certainly tempting, some of the country’s most memorable sights have nothing to do with relaxing by the sea.
So, if you’re wondering where to start, here are ten incredible places in Greece that are well worth a visit.
1. Temple of Poseidon

Built in 444 B.C, the Temple of Poseidon stands on a craggy spur at Cape Sounion and is one of the most picturesque sites in the country. The Greeks certainly know how and where to build their treasured monuments and with slender white columns peering over a 65-metre drop to the sea, this structure is visually impressive to say the least.
2. Acropolis
There are many wonderful ancient sites across the globe, but the Acropolis is arguably one of the best in the Western world. Crowned by the Parthenon – a temple built to honour the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos – this high city offers spectacular views over Athens and is the perfect place for a photo opportunity.
3. Meteora
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meteora (which means ‘suspended in air’) is a collection of six monasteries situated on top of breath-taking rock pillars often referred to as columns of the sky. From the 11th century onwards, monks have taken residence amongst this almost inaccessible region of sandstone peaks which tower over central Greece.
4. Delphi Theatre
The Delphi Theatre was constructed in the fourth century B.C just northwest from the Sanctuary of Apollo and, thanks to its incredible acoustics, was once home to many dramatic performances, contests and musical shows. Made from limestone it’s a perfect example of open air construction and is a must-see if you’re in the area.
5. Temple of Olympian Zeus

The largest temple in Greece, this magnificent structure is a sight to behold. Dedicated to Zeus Olympus, this building dates back to 515 B.C and wonderfully encapsulates the grandeur of Ancient Greece. Although only 15 of the 104 columns remain, it’s still capable of taking your breath away, so why not see what all the fuss is about for yourself?
6. Syntagma Square
A major point of interest for anyone travelling to Athens is Syntagma Square. Important Greek events have been celebrated here over the years, and as the military Junta government was overthrown here in 1974, it’s obvious how historically significant this part of Greece is. Tourists flock to see the changing of the guards take place in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the various statues and fountains make this a wonderful area to walk around and take some great snaps.
7. National Archaeological Museum
If you love nothing more than viewing contemporary and ancient artwork, this is the place to be. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is home to modern works as well as artwork dating back to the Neolithic age and its collection of small vases, working tools, clay vases and other artefacts dating back to the seventh millennium are sure to capture your interest.
8. Mount Lycabettus
Fancy an adventure? Then head up to Mount Lycabettus. As the highest point in Athens, it allows visitors to enjoy spectacular views over the city as well as across the Attica basin and the Aegean Sea. So, whether you feel like an early morning trek or a romantic evening meal to finish off a busy day, Mount Lycabettus provides the perfect setting.
9. National Gardens
Also in Athens, the National Gardens is a peaceful and tranquil haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s green, it’s picturesque and if you need some quiet time to reflect on the things you’ve seen in the fascinating country, then this is the place to unwind a little.
10. Simos beach

If downtime is what you need, then why not head to the small Greek island of Elafonisos where you will find the luxurious Simos beach? A place of true beauty, this is the ideal spot to while the time away on a sunbed or splash around in the sea and with sandy beaches to explore and clear skies to enjoy, you won’t want to head home anytime soon.
Greece is full of magnificent sights, but these are certainly ten of the best. And while many people visit for a holiday, others find themselves dreaming of spending a little more time here. If you’ve fallen in love with the country, browsing greek exclusive properties could be a lovely way to explore what making Greece your second home might look like.
