Making Time for the Little Things That Help You Unwind
I am terrible at doing nothing.
Even when I’m supposed to be relaxing, I feel like I need to be doing something (most likely blogging or entering competitions). My brain doesn’t really switch off, and if I do sit there doing absolutely nothing, it isn’t long before I start thinking about all the things I should be doing instead.
So I definitely haven’t cracked the secret to completely switching off.
What I have found are a few little things that make an evening feel better.
It Doesn’t Need to Be a Whole Routine

Sometimes self-care sounds like an awful lot of work.
Run a bath, do a full skincare routine, journal, meditate, put your phone away, do some yoga.
I’m tired just thinking about it.
For me, unwinding is normally much simpler. Give me a cup of tea, a candle, something good to watch or listen to, and somewhere to put my feet up with a comfy cushion, and I’m happy. Just don’t forget the blanket once it gets cold!
That’ll do me.
Little Things Can Make a Difference
Fragrance is a big thing for me, so candles can really change how I feel. There’s something about having a relaxing scent fill the room that makes everything feel a bit cosier.
I’m also partial to a good moisturiser, and I do love a face mask when the mood strikes as long as the feel doesn’t give me the ick.
But I’m definitely not someone with an elaborate pampering routine every evening.
Sometimes I fancy doing a bit more; sometimes I absolutely do not, and both are fine.
Some Evenings, Feet Up Is Enough

When my energy is particularly low, my version of unwinding gets even simpler.
Feet up on the sofa, something on the TV and a cup of tea from Ash (he makes the best ones).
Ideally, I’ll find a film or one of those ridiculously long YouTube uploads, so I don’t even have to keep rolling onto the next episode.
Yes, apparently even pressing “next episode” can sometimes be more effort than I’m willing to give.
But that’s the thing. Looking after yourself doesn’t always have to involve actually doing very much.
Sometimes making yourself comfortable and stopping for a while is enough.
I’m Still Learning to Do Nothing

I wish I could say I no longer feel guilty about resting, but I absolutely do.
There’s always that little voice reminding me about something I could be doing instead. I don’t think I’m suddenly going to become someone who can sit peacefully doing nothing and think about absolutely nothing.
That sounds suspicious anyway.
But I can make things a little nicer while I’m doing my version of relaxing.
A candle I love. A good moisturiser or face mask. An audiobook, film or something on YouTube. Feet up. Blanket on.
And tea.
Always tea.
Apparently, most problems can be made at least slightly better by putting the kettle on.
