Things That Feel Illegal But Aren’t
Have you ever done something completely normal and suddenly felt like you were getting away with something?
Not in a dramatic, crime-documentary way, but in a quieter, everyday sense, when your brain suddenly wonders, is this really OK?
The truth is that modern life is full of tiny moments that feel strangely rebellious, even though they’re perfectly acceptable. Sometimes it’s because we’re used to rules and routines, and at other times, it’s just because our brains enjoy a bit of harmless chaos.
So I’ve put together some completely normal things that in some ways feel a little bit illegal.
Leaving a Shop Without Buying Anything

You walk into a shop, browse around for a few minutes, and then leave.
No purchases, no bag, no anything.
Even though shops are literally designed for browsing, it somehow feels like you’ve done something wrong as you walk back out through the door.
Why does it feel like security might suddenly appear and ask questions?
Waking Up Before Your Alarm
On most mornings, the alarm clock going off feels like the worst thing that could happen.
However, on those rare occasions when you wake up naturally a few minutes before it goes off, it feels like you’ve beaten the system.
You glance at the clock, you realise you still have time, and then lie there feeling strangely powerful.
The Supermarket Queue Moving Perfectly
Usually, supermarket queues are a gamble.
You pick one line and immediately watch the other queues start moving faster; it’s like some unspoken rule of nature.
But sometimes, by pure luck, you choose the fastest queue and glide through the checkout like you just knew it was the right one.
And it all feels suspiciously easy.
Cancelling Plans
For some reason, cancelling plans still carries a sense of guilt, even when it’s for completely reasonable reasons.
However, what is it about the moment you send that message and suddenly have a free evening again?
Relief, unexpected peace and an evening that now belongs entirely to you, even if you really aren’t feeling 100%.
The Washing Drying Before It Rains

If you live in the UK, drying washing outside can feel like a high-risk sport.
You hang everything out carefully, glance nervously at the clouds, and hope for the best.
On the rare day when the washing dries completely before the rain arrives, it feels like you’ve pulled off some kind of miracle. We even managed two loads in one day this week – what happened?!
Finding Money in a Pocket
Finding forgotten coins or a note in an old coat pocket always feels a little bit magical.
Technically, it was your money all along.
Yet it somehow feels like you’ve discovered bonus money the universe left behind for you.
Finishing a Task Earlier Than Expected
Sometimes a job you’ve been putting off turns out to be surprisingly quick.
You finally get around to doing it, and suddenly it’s finished in ten minutes.
Then you can feel the rest of the day stretch out in front of you like bonus time you weren’t supposed to have.
Walking Into a Room and Remembering Why
Usually, the moment you enter a room, your brain wipes the memory of why you went there. (Please tell me it’s not just me – I’m not that old yet).
But every now and then, you walk into the room and immediately remember what you needed.
Then you do a little victory dance in your mind as you quickly grab it.
Using the “Good” Mug on a Random Day
Most of us have one mug that feels slightly more special than the others.
Maybe it’s bigger, prettier, or just the one you always reach for when you want a proper cup of tea.
Using it on an ordinary Tuesday feels oddly indulgent.
Going to Bed Ridiculously Early
Going to bed early should feel sensible.
However, sometimes it feels like you’re sneaking away from the world.
You climb into bed at 8:30 pm with a book or a cosy blanket, and it feels almost rebellious.
Finishing a Book in One Sitting

When a book completely pulls you in, and you end up reading far longer than planned, it feels slightly chaotic but incredibly satisfying.
You look up and realise hours have passed, but there are definitely no regrets.
Leaving Your Phone in Another Room
For a few minutes, the world goes quiet.
No notifications, no distractions, no endless scrolling.
It feels strangely peaceful, and also slightly like you’ve stepped outside the rules of modern life.
Taking the Last Biscuit
There’s always that moment when only one biscuit is left in the packet.
Everyone notices it, but no one wants to be the one who takes it.
Then, when you finally decide to go for it, it somehow feels like you’ve broken an unspoken rule.
Finishing the Milk Exactly
Running out of milk normally means an emergency trip to the shop.
But on the rare occasion you pour the last of the milk and realise it was exactly the amount you needed, it feels like some kind of domestic superpower.
Hitting Every Green Light
Driving through town without stopping once at traffic lights feels suspiciously lucky.
You expect a red light to appear at any moment to restore balance to the universe, so when it doesn’t, the journey feels oddly smooth.
Getting the Perfect Parking Space
You pull into a busy car park expecting chaos.
Then, suddenly, a perfect space appears right near the entrance.
It feels like you’ve been handed VIP parking privileges.
Opening a Packet Perfectly First Time
Usually, packets refuse to open properly. Especially if it’s a pack of Pokémon cards.
You pull the tab, and it tears sideways or refuses to open.
Yet every now and then, the packet opens neatly along the line like it was designed to do.
It feels like you’ve unlocked a secret skill.
The Kettle Finishing Just as You Reach It

You walk into the kitchen, and the kettle clicks off at the exact moment you arrive.
No waiting, no awkward finger tapping.
Just perfect tea timing.
Finding the Remote Straight Away
Normally, the remote is hiding somewhere mysterious.
Under cushions, behind furniture, across the room, under you.
Yet every once in a while, it’s exactly where you left it, and it all feels too easy.
Getting Through a Phone Call Quickly
You brace yourself for a long call with customer service.
You prepare for hold music and endless menu options.
Then, suddenly, the issue is solved in minutes, and it feels like you’ve escaped a trap.
The First Sip of Tea When You Really Needed It
Sometimes a cup of tea just hits differently.
The first sip after a long day or stressful moment feels almost restorative; it’s like the weight is just released from your shoulders.
It shouldn’t feel that powerful, but somehow it does.
When Fresh Bedding Feels Like a Hotel
Climbing into freshly washed bedding feels ridiculously luxurious.
It’s the same bed you sleep in every night, yet with the feeling of fresh crisp sheets it somehow feels like you’ve checked into a fancy hotel.
Finding Exactly What You Went Into the Shop For
Most of us enter shops with good intentions, but yet we go in for one thing and somehow leave with five.
However, on the rare occasion you walk in, grab exactly what you came for, and leave?
It feels oddly efficient.
Remembering a Password Without Resetting It
Modern life seems to require hundreds of passwords.
For emails, shopping sites, streaming services and everything else.
So when you type one in, and it works the first time, it feels like a small miracle has just happened.
A Delivery Arriving Earlier Than Expected
Most deliveries give you a vague time window that feels like half the day.
However, when something arrives early, it feels like an unexpected bonus and can free you up for the rest of the day.
Finding the Exact Song You Wanted Immediately

You open your music app expecting to scroll for ages.
But the song you want appears straight away, no searching required.
It feels like the universe just knew what you wanted to hear.
When a To-Do List Actually Gets Done
Most to-do lists grow faster than they shrink.
But occasionally you manage to tick off everything, you look down at the list and realise it’s finished.
Now that is satisfying.
The Joy of Tiny Rebellions
Life is full of big responsibilities and serious decisions.
But it’s often these small, harmless moments that can make a day feel a little lighter.
Leaving a shop empty-handed, cancelling plans, or going to bed early might not be rebellious in any real sense, yet sometimes those tiny breaks from routine feel like small victories.
And honestly, we could all use a few more of those.

I still find it difficult to cancel plans especially if it will ‘let people down’. Too much of a people pleaser for my own good.
Approaching a roundabout and needing to go left but find a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge queue in the left hand lane so going into the empty right hand lane and swizzing right round the roundabout and taking the exit like I wanted, saving time and not sitting breathing in all the fumes of the car in front by sitting in the queue, hope it’s not illegal.
The first cup of perfect tea in the morning.
