This is a collaborative post.
The days are finally getting longer, so when you get home and it’s still daylight, you’re going to want to take advantage of it. But did you know a few design options might be keeping you from the best chances of sunlight in your home? Sure, you can invest in a good lamp, but it’s simply not the same. Natural light makes your home look better and makes you feel better. Take a look at our tips for letting as much natural light into your home as possible.
Full length windows
If you’re a lover of natural light, who perhaps feels their mood dip in the darkness, you’ll want to look for big windows while you’re house hunting. Additionally, high ceilings would be a good choice, and any bay windows.
If you don’t have any of those as an option, you might want to think about installing some glass doors, like in the back end of the house. Some sliding glass doors will allow you to let light swim into your kitchen or dining room. It will allow you to create a warm space to enjoy the sun in your home, with a cup of coffee at the table with the sunrise or a meal by the sunset. Take a look at these dining room sets to create the kind of space that appeals to you.

Mesh curtains
All windows need curtains, even if the point isn’t to block the light out. They keep in the heat, they add some soft furnishing to the room, they can add colour or texture, etc. But if the point is to let in as much light as possible, you might want to look into some mesh curtains. They’ll let in a lot of light while making sure your windows don’t look bare and add a floaty, cosy feel to the room.
Mirrors
Mirrors are a great way to let light into the room. Not only will it allow light to bounce around the room, making it appear brighter, but it will also make the room feel a lot bigger. Mirrors are a great option for small spaces for this reason. Small spaces with small windows that will need extra help getting light in can use mirrors to make the room feel bigger and brighter.
Whites and pastels
What will help all of these options is the colour of your rooms. There are a lot of bold, moody colours going around the home décor trends at the moment, but for the purposes of getting light into your home, you might want to keep that to an accent wall at the most. White is best for letting light in and reflecting around the room. If you are absolutely dying for a hint of colour, consider pastels or light neutrals, which are all the rage right now. Additionally, you can add pops of colour in your home furnishings, like statement sofas, cushions, wall art or painted wooden furniture. And as an extra tip, make sure to mix up all your materials so your white home doesn’t feel too clinical.
