For When You Can’t Relax
We all know that relaxation is vital to our wellbeing, but for many of us, switching off and relaxing is a lot easier said than done.
If you’re currently struggling to relax, despite desperately needing to switch off for a while, here are a few things that may help:
Know your relaxation triggers

This may seem a bit like stating the obvious, but a lot of people really don’t know what truly relaxes them and they end up doing what they think they should do to relax, even if it’s wrong for them. So, whether you like to relax with Al Fakher shisha, a long meditation session or a walk in the local park, find out what works for you and make time for it in your day.
Schedule relaxation time
If you’re serious about relaxing, find a place in your schedule for it and make that time count. After all, truly relaxing for one hour will refresh you far better than 8 hours of half-hearted relaxation ever could. If you schedule your time to relax, you’re far more likely to actually focus on doing nothing but relax, and that will make it happen much more easily for you.
Take a mindful minute
On those days when you really can’t fit in a block of relaxation time, take several mindful minutes throughout the day instead. There is no one who cannot pause what they’re doing for at least 60 seconds a few times a day, and by doing just that, closing your eyes and focusing on your breath, you can gain a little more peace throughout your day until you can fit a little more in.
Don’t try to force it
Often, when you’re struggling to relax, the worst thing you can do is try to force it. Telling yourself that you will relax no matter what rarely works. All it does is make you feel more frustrated which means you’re less likely to relax overall and the vicious circle begins.
Be kind to yourself
Going hand in hand with the above, when you’re struggling to relax, you should be kind to yourself. Yes, relaxation is important, but if you aren’t feeling it you aren’t feeling it, and you can always try again later. Do what you can to feel as good as you can and leave it at that.
Talk to a therapist
Some people have more serious reasons why they can’t relax. They may have learned from a young age that “being idle” is a sin or they may have negative thoughts and emotions preventing them from ever finding any peace in life. If this sounds familiar to you, seeing a good therapist to talk through your issues and come up with strategies to help you rest more could be beneficial. It’s a really common problem, so there’s no reason about being embarrassed that you need professional help to relax – we all need a little professional help from time to time.
I hope this helps you to find a little more peace and relaxation in your life.
