Learn a New Skill While on Holiday
While for many the idea of going on holiday means long lazy hours by the pool or the sea, for others it can mean doing something completely different. For some, it means a time when they can step out of their everyday life and do something out of the ordinary, learning to do something different and if in 2018 you are thinking about learning a new skill while on holiday here are some ideas for you.
Learn to Ski
Have you ever thought about taking to the slopes on holiday? Then bundling up in a hot tub at the end of the day to cure the chills? However, you have been put off by the thought of everyone being pros? Well never fear as there are places like The Snow School, who are all about teaching people the how-tos of taking to the slopes. Or you could even learn on home turf thanks to the Chill Factore, which claim to have you ready for the slopes in just 3 weeks.
Go Caving
Something I would have loved to have done once upon a time was to explore caves, not just walk through with ease, but put on a headtorch, get on my hands and knees then crawl around. There are many places across not only the UK but the world that offer adventure caving, for both new and experienced people.
Learn to Scuba Dive
There is so much of an undiscovered world beneath the surface, so why not learn to scuba dive so you can explore it. You only need to take to YouTube to see how beautiful the depth of the ocean can be, long-lost shipwrecks live alongside the awe-inspiring creatures that can be seen below.
Learn to Cook
For anyone who has a love of cooking, learning the local cuisine might be just what you would like to do and the great thing is there are many holidays out there that offer you the chance to do so. From learning to play with sweet peppers and olives in Spain to good old pasta and pizza in Italy.
Of course, they are just a few ideas of ways you can learn a new skill while on holiday and there are many more options of skills to learn out there. Whatever you do though, remember to have fun, be it educational or just purely relaxing.
Have you ever taken a skill-based holiday, what did you learn?

Love the ideas.
This reminds me, i looked into going away to Norway to learn how to build igloos. An idea im still excited about, yet somehow haven’t quite booked. Definitely going back on my 2018 list. Thank you!!
I really love these ideas, I’m always travelling and love to learn new things.
Learning something new while on holiday sounds like a great idea. I always try to learn a new language or so!!
That is definitely something a lot of people like to do I think, especially when visiting somewhere with another language.
Always good to pick up a new skill. You never know what you’ll need to know these days 😉
Most definitely – I think we can never stop learning as well.
What a great way to utilize leisure time. Learning a new skill is always inspiring.
I think it is nice being able to do something different while you are having leisure time, definitely adds to the experience.
We took a cookery class when we were travelling around Thailand and it was nice to come home having learnt some new skills.
Oh wow I bet that was really interesting – what sort of things did you get to cook?
I’m far too clumsy to learn to ski, but I’d love to take a new skill holiday. Maybe cooking in Italy? Gosh, I’d love that! x
Ohh you should do it! Why not hey, follow that thought and go for it!
I would love to learn to Ski. both my husband and teen can but I’ve yet to learn
Ohh good luck if you decide to give it a try one day soon!
I love the idea of learning a new skill on holiday and it’s the perfect opportunity to do so. I’ve always wanted to go on a cooking holiday to Italy – that would be a dream!
Ohh that sounds amazing, I really hope you manage to fulfil your dream one day and cook up a storm in Italy!
Such a great idea to go on a skill-based holiday. I have never been but would love to learn to ski!
It is something a bit different isn’t it and I think we can all enjoy learning something new from time to time.
It’s not the type of holiday Iv actually ever considered to be completely honest but I’m not against it.
You never know one day you might decide to go for it and have the most amazing time!
I need a holiday big time, and one where I can learn something fun too would be even better! Can you believe I’ve lived in Utah my entire life and never done downhill skiing? I did cross country once, but that’s it!
Oh I hope one day you get to have a go and skiing! There is something wonderful about learning something new to take home with you.
My mummy would love to learn how to ski while on holiday as we’ve never been to the slopes before. We’ve always been put off by the prices but there are some really good deals on at the moment!
Well I shall keep my fingers crossed you get to learn to ski all together one day.
Call me crazy but I love to find a good cooking place. There is so many in South Carolina and when I visit my sister in law, I always plan around a class. I love the couple and mother daughter cooking themes. We usually try to learn something during my vacations with the family.
Nothing crazy about that at all! I hope you have the most amazing time next time you go.
If I would learn a skill while on vacation, I think I would love to learn to cook like the locals. I would love to learn to make one or two of their native delicacies. That would be awesome!
There is something wonderful about local foods isn’t there, everywhere does things so differently.
I learned Spanish on a holiday. I will be going back to Panama this year to take more classes it was worth it.
Oh wow I bet it is so much easier when you are emersed in the language around you as well.
I’ve never learned a skill on
Holiday and I’m not a sporty active person but I would love to try a local culture cooking class
There is so much you could do – I did jewellery making once oh and pottery painting both were such fun.
I’d love to learn to ski on a holiday. Right now I’m pretty good at scuba diving, so have based a few holidays around that.
I hope one day you get to out skiing on holiday, scuba diving is such an awesome thing to be able to do.
I learned to snorkel during our trip to island hopping in South East Asia. It was fun and I really enjoyed my vacation there.
Oh wow I bet it was amazing getting to visit Asia!
Taking a skill based holiday is one of my aims for 2018 – I would love to learn something new
Ohh do you know what kind you would like to do?
That is a really great use of time. New skills are really fun to dive into.
They really are, you never know when they might come in useful either!
When I was still single, I never knew I could cook, in fact I hated it. But now that I am a Mom, I discovered, cooking is actually therapeutic!
It is interesting how it changes isn’t it – I am glad you found something that brought out the cook in you.
This is a great idea! We should try to learn the crafts and cultures of all the places around us! I adore this idea and will actually project this when on y own holidays!
Most definitely I’ve had a lot of fun on holiday getting to learn different crafts.
It would be nice just to have a holiday first! I’ve not had one for years now. But I love the idea of learning to cook, especially learning local dishes as they would be more authentic and certainly tasty.
Aww I hope you manage to go on holiday sometime soon and really put your feet up.
I like being active especially on a cold weather. You had a great list it gives me an idea to stay active. Its been a long time since the last time I ski that’s probably what I want to do next.
I hope you manage to take a skiing holiday soon!
Learning a skill on holiday is really very useful. Coming from a land where we do not get to see much snow, would love to learn to ski on holiday.
I hope you one day get to manage to go and ski and of course enjoy all the snow!
When I was travelling Asia one of my regrets is not taking a cooking class while I was there. It’s a great idea!
I hope one day you perhaps get to go back and take up a cooking class or two!
I actually love this idea. you must have read my mind, as just come back from doing some caving while I was away and it was fab x
Oh my goodness I am quite jealous! I hope you had an amazing time.
I started doing my scuba diving PADI in this country and realised it was far too cold and I wasn’t enjoying it so I want to go away in order to learn x
Oh no – I hope you manage to get to learn one day when you are away. x
I love scuba diving and caving but skiing scares me lol. I went one time with my family while we lived in Utah but I had a broken leg so I didn’t ski ( yay for a way out of that haha)
Haha that sounds like one way to get out of it a painful one though 🙁
I may not do something, but I always like to learn something out of the ordinary or a little known fact. Such as you don’t pronounce the 2nd T in Toronto.
Ok I had no idea about that I have been saying it wrong my whole life! Thank you.
love your thought behind this post. My word for 2018 is GO and yes I plan to try new, go new places and the list goes on Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Oh wow good luck with GOing all manner of places this year! Have an amazing time.
I have actually taken cooking classes on a couple of trips before. It is always a lot of fun.
Oh wow what sort of things have you learnt if you wouldn’t mind me asking?
I did this last year, although I didn’t exactly perfect snowboarding I took lessons. I managed to get up and down on the board a few times. We were on a couples holiday, it was a lot of fun.
Hey that’s probably better than I would ever be able to do! Be proud of it.
I think the new skill that really hit home to me was the cooking one. I love being in the kitchen, but I think it’s something that my whole family needs to get behind. Perhaps we could take cooking classes as a fam!
Why not they might be more open to it as well when you are away from home!
I have been in a cave once and it was such an experience! Love the list you compiled – these would even make good resolutions in terms of being more “adventurous!”
There is something wonderful about caves, I always find them so mystical and full of secrets.
I love this post, we are always trying to find opportunities to learn while we’re away, particularly learning to cook up the local cuisine.
I hope you manage to find some great things to do this year, I always love reading about your adventures!
I learned to ski last year for the first time and it was amazing – I’d love to go and do it again 🙂
I bet it is amazing and so freeing when you zoom down the hills lol.
I have always wanting to try to Ski but not had the guts to yet, I do think its a fantastic way learn new skills out on holidays especially when you have not tried them before.
Aww you never know perhaps this year is your year to try skiing!
I have been through caves before but I have not tried proper caving due to my claustrophobia although it does depend on the size of the cave. If it is bigger I would definitely be up for exploring the caves through proper ‘caving’!
I have to admit my claustrophobia does worry me and if I would manage it – as I can be a nightmare in tight spaces.
I’m gonna have to pass on the “learn to ski.” I tried, and it was the worst experience of my life. Lol! I vowed to never, ever go again. Caving sounds fun, we have quite a few where I live. I feel like learning to cook is a necessity I definitely need to pick up as well.
Oh no what a shame 🙁 I think perhaps I would fall on my behind more times than I would like to admit if I was to try.
Totally agree with you, we find that when we go for holiday we actually have the time to try something new. Hopefully we can go for a holiday soon.
These all sound like fun! I’d love to try out a cooking class in another country! *-*
I think it would be amazing as every country seems to do it so differently as well.
These all sound like fun things to do while on vacation. I’d love to learn to scuba dive!
I would love to have done more around it I have to admit.
I love learning something new every time I go on a trip. That is the whole reason to go on a trip. I have learned how to scuba dive I have explored caves and I love learning about the nature of wherever I am.
You can do some amazing things in nature – there’s always walks to do and people who know so much to take you.
Taking a new class is always exciting. There are a couple of classes I have been interested in taking. You have given me the push to call and check into them.
I am all about learning something new while on vacay. I mean that’s the fun of it. Most of the places we visit have some sort of activity where you can learn something new. Whether it’s a new recipe or mastering a dance move or cocktail.
It is amazing how many places do have some sort of learning activity on when you look through what a place offers.
I’ve been skiing many times. These days, I had rather sit in the lodge and read while enjoying a nice, hot cup of hot cocoa. Unfortunately, I’m not very good when it comes to skiing so I watch the family ski and enjoy a good book. 🙂
I love to cook and I dream of a holiday where I can take cooking classes. That would be amazing.
These would be fun to try out. I could attempt the cooking one, but I stink at cooking. I’d like to ski, but my coordination isn’t the best. I think the caving would be the one I could do well.
I have never taken a skill based holiday. I have always wanted to go snorkeling and scuba diving so I can see where that would work well for that type of trip.
