25 Cosy Things To Do Between Christmas and New Year
The week between Christmas and New Year is its own strange little pocket of time. The days blur. The snacks multiply. Your sense of what day it is becomes… purely theoretical.
So if you’re sat there thinking “what do I even do with myself?” (without spending a small fortune), here are 25 cosy, low-cost ideas that don’t demand loads of energy or enthusiasm.
Why the in-between week feels so weird
You’ve just powered through a big “event” (even if it was low-key). Routines vanish. People are off work. Your body is catching up. And there’s often that odd pressure to either “make the most of it” or “get your life together”.We’re not doing either. We’re doing cosy. We’re doing gently. We’re doing “good enough”.
25 cosy, low-spend things to do

At-home cosy (minimal effort, maximum vibe)
- Make a “snack plate dinner” (aka fridge tapas).
- Rewatch a comfort show you could quote in your sleep.
- Hot drink tasting at home: tea, hot choc, spice it up, rate them like a judge.
- Do a 10-minute tidy… then stop. That’s the whole plan.
- Put fresh bedding on (the one reset that hits every time).
- Write a “tiny wins” list from the year (even silly ones count).
- Make your own “cinema night”: blanket, dim lights, popcorn, no guilt.
- Try a new podcast while doing something mindless (sorting a drawer, folding laundry).
- Build a cosy reading nook for one evening (pillows + lamp + snack = sorted).
- Do a “soft admin” session: one small task you’ve been avoiding (then reward).
Creative but not intense

- Colouring/paint-by-numbers/craft kit you’ve been “saving”.
- Make a mini vision board… but for feelings (calm, cosy, steady), not achievements.
- Take photos of winter light around your home (it’s free and weirdly soothing).
- Start a “joy jar” for January: write 10 easy pick-me-ups on slips of paper.
- Write a letter to Future You for next December (funny, kind, or both).
Get out of the house (low-cost, no big mission)
- A slow winter walk with a “spot the…” challenge (cats, sparkly lights, cute doors).
- Pop to the library and pick something purely for escapism.
- Window-shop somewhere warm (shopping centre counts as indoor walking).
- Take a flask somewhere scenic and just… sit. Like a mysterious main character.
- Visit a charity shop with one tiny goal (mug, book, scarf) and leave.
Social but gentle

- Board game afternoon with “bring your own snacks”.
- “Errands together” meet-up: go for a walk and do a food shop like grown-ups.
- Phone call with someone you love while you potter about.
- Invite a friend for a “no hosting” brew (tell them you’re in goblin mode).
- Plan one easy thing for January that you can look forward to (even if it’s just a café visit).
A simple mini-plan if you want structure
Pick one from each:
- Cosy at home
- Tiny reset
- Gentle outside moment
That’s it. No heroic scheduling.
Closing thought: If all you do is exist, snack, and take a deep breath, you’ve done the in-between week correctly.

some good suggestions here, the time between christmas and new year always seems very flat
It’s such a hard time of year isn’t it? I really struggle with it.
Some really great advice, my plan for a downtime is to sit down and relax in front of the tele, thought I will take in the parkruns over Christmas and New Year too.
We are taking a the motorhome into the new forest and new years eve. Low key – spot the deer and ponies. No phone or wifi signal.
Oh I bet that is amazing! What a lovely way to spend the new year as well.
It is , the crazy parties not for us ! Merry Christmas x
