Valentines from Moonpig.com: Review

Valentines is just over a week away – yes we have hit February running already and of course moonpig.com have you covered when it comes to great gifts for your loved one this Valentines, be you spending it together or apart you can take to the internet, order from the comfort of your own home and have it delivered right to the recipient. All you need is your credit card or debit card!

I’ve been test driving a couple of their Valentines ideas to help you get the best; first up if you haven’t guessed already is the delicious cake you see above.

Red Velvet by Sponge – £18.

I’ve heard about Red Velvet cake before, but never had the pleasure of trying it – the striking red colour is made by adding beetroot of some sort to the cake (in this instance it contains beetroot powder). The cake also contains a dash of chocolate chips within the sponge, while it is held together with vanilla white butter icing; the top features another small layer of the same icing while the heart is made from red-crumbs.

It almost seemed a shame to cut into it, though of course one couldn’t resist the smell of cake that wafted around the room as I tried to take the pictures and a review wouldn’t be a review if I didn’t try it so (oh the hardship) we all quickly grabbed a piece.

One of the things I find most disappointing quite often when buying cakes is they tend to be a little on the dry side – I can safely say though, with this sponge, that is far from the case, it offers a beautifully moist cake, that allows the hints of chocolate to shine through as you come across them, the icing isn’t too sweet – complementing the cake rather than taking it over.

In fact all of us agree this is a cake we would love to have this delicious Red Velvet cake again – and in fact I really rather trying other cakes from the Sponge range.

If however you aren’t so much a sponge person how about treating your other half to all the things they need for a Breakfast in Bed (of course if you happen to be with them on Valentines morning you could even put it together for them).

Breakfast in Bed Hamper – £40.

This box is just perfect for breakfast in bed be it for one or two – it really does contain everything (bar the bread and butter for the toast) in fact as I went through it, it seemed a bit like Mary Poppins bag as I kept digging, just one more thing, out. So really there is enough to keep you going for quite a few mornings.

This box really does include the finest – allowing you to really choose what you wish to accompany your breakfast, no matter if you are a tea drinker, coffee pot, orange guzzler or perhaps you fancy a bit of champagne breakfast to help celebrate that special day. I personally don’t drink alcohol and although Ash does from time to time champagne isn’t his favourite tipple so I left it for myself parents who apparently popped the mini bottle open that night and reported that it tasted very nice (oh the description). The orange juice is not made from concentrate (yay!) and the coffee is Brazilian ground which I believe comes in a number of different flavours – in this box we received Rockin Robin which had a bit of a festive feel to it.

Of course you may need some food to soak up all that drink and the box includes a host of options.

Scrumshus – I think the name says it all with this award winning granola, which contains
oats, honey, coconut, raisins, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, cashew & hazelnuts, almonds & pumpkin seeds and is pretty much one of the nicest tasting granola’s I have come across to date – I really will be sad when this jar runs out they seem to have the taste and texture just right. For those who love toast you have two delicious jams to choose from, Four Berries and St. Clements Marmalade with Whisky, anyone fancy making me some toast?

There’s even a special toast press included in the box allowing you to press a message into your loved ones nibble.

A hamper wouldn’t be complete without extras and this hamper just happens to have some fantastic ones – including a Good Morning toast stamp – remember to press it well into the toast to unsure the best looking toast in town!

Every breakfast in bed tray needs a flower, but this synthetic one placed into a pretty old style milk bottle means there’s no worries about it going flying and spilling water everywhere and last but not least to clean all those crumbs away a tiny dustpan and brush.

Now just to wait for Valentines and hopefully have enough bits left to convince Ash that breakfast in bed is a good idea.
