Walking in style

Walking with style

I'm going to admit my long hiking days with the dog are long behind me (and probably her as well) but that doesn't mean that outdoor equipment shouldn't be thought about, especially with the winter coming and if you are someone who walks to work, then I really suggest looking at certain things to help keep you dry and comfortable on a cold and perhaps wet winters day.

Probably a bit of an obvious one to start with but a good waterproof jacket is always a must have and there is always something for everyone withย so many different to choose from, such thin or padded, complete with GoreTex or not, with pockets or without. But the one thing that has come a long way is style, you can actually get some really good looking jackets that look nothing like the anoraks of the past.

When it comes to carrying all you need a backpack is a great idea, it keeps your hands free and your things dry (you can even buy waterproof jackets for many these days). What's more lots of bags these days now come with compartments for your gadgets, some of them even allow you to keep you tablet in the bag and use it through a see-through cover.

Having a pair of trousers to walk in can be a good thing, other than them being fitted with extra pockets they can help keep your work wear looking its best. These are probably better for walking in the summer as they can be quickly changed from shorts to trousers, but other ones available include completely waterproof options.

No matter where you are going, what you wear on your feet is always important.ย The ones in the picture are specifically for trail running (oh how I wish I could do that), but with such a wide range on the market there is bound to be someย which will help keep your office shoes in tip top shape condition.

What's your essential item to keep you warm and dry over winter?

A giant yes to a backpack for any kind of walking! So much easier on your body and fits a whole lot in. I have a really great light-weight rain mac that folds away into a tiny bag and is a lovely blue and white spotty material, so that’s really useful, but it’s not as great at being warm so maybe for autumn/winter I need to invest in something sturdier! x

  2. Jenny

I don’t go walking but I have invested in a great raincoat for the school run!

  3. Natasha

I don’t do any kind of exercise (Boo me) but I am buying parka from Topshop, thats as close as I’ll get to waterproof.

  4. JuggleMum, Nadine Hill

I don’t go out walking but I certainly like a waterproof jacket if I go for a run in the winter!

  5. Erica Price

Walking trousers are really good – much better than walking in jeans or similar. The right gear makes such a difference.

  6. Jen Walshaw

For me it is layers and great shoes. I HATE having wet feet

  7. Robin Rue (@massholemommy)

I try to workout inside in the winter, but if I do go for a walk outside, I bundle up! A LOT!

  8. Bex Smith

Can’t beat a good backpack, so handy for carrying pretty much everything around with you!

  9. Rachel

I don’t walk great distances or do walking holidays, but I do like flat shoes and they must be comfortable x

  10. Daniella

Great pics, I am in desperate need of some new walking shoes. I prefer an ankle boot now to a shoe as they offer me a bit of extra support.

  11. Sonia

This looks like a perfect walking outfit, love the trainers x

  13. Lois Alter Mark

I am not a hiker at all but my daughter recently walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, which is over 500 miles! She used everything you mentioned in your post. I’m so proud of her but you couldn’t pay me to do it!

  14. Globalmouse

I am trying to get better at layering clothes, this is going to be my plan for this coming winter as I always feel the cold.

  15. Heather D. (@GirlGoneMom)

I love that jacket. The whole ensemble looks comfy!

  16. Emma

I tend to shy away from the wet weather, but now that I have a baby, staying home isn’t an option as much these days. Thank you for the great post. I need a rain jacket and some good boots for sure x

  17. Claire

Great list of kit. Out door clothing/kit is such a valuble addition with the weather being so unpredictable these days! I am rarely without my waterproofs!

  18. leeshastarr

I’ve been looking for warm things for my holiday to Iceland next week as I normally wear a fashionable jumper during winter rather than items that actually keep me warm. I still need to buy a waterproof coat but I got two rucksacks and a pair of hiking boots.

  19. Jenni - Odd Socks and Lollipops

  27. Liz Mays

I think a nice backpack or at least trousers with plenty of pockets are perfect for walking. When you’re going long distance you need that storage.

  28. Lucy (Hello Beautiful Bear)

The weather is so unpredictable that I always get my raincoat out over autumn/winter together with some big boots/wellies to manage any weather conditions!

I have a good pair of gloves. I tend to stay inside when it is wet or rainy, but I t have my gloves. I find when my hands are dry and warm, the wet and cold is more bearable.

  30. Amber NElson

I used to do heels, but now I am all about comfort!

  31. Kacie Morgan

These clothes look pretty comfy and cosy – just what we need with the weather about to change ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Astrid

These tips are great. You remind me that I may have to get a new jacket this coming winter. That’s always a struggle. Thankfully I have had mine for eight years now. You see, I’m not a fashionista so don’t care abut the latest trends. I agree extra pockets in your trousers are a great thing too.

  33. Maureen@ADebtFreeStressFreeLife

Investing in a good back pack is really crucial. If it’s not well made you notice the difference.

  34. Deanna

I’ve never been much of a walker but my best friend goes quite often and always asks me to go too

  35. Rosey

It really is important to have the right shoe for the right event .I just got shoes that are for running only. I can’t wait to put them to good use.

  36. Mama to 5 BLessings

  38. Annemarie LeBlanc

I am more of a practical and comfy dresser. For the coming winter, I would love to have a new pair of boots that are comfortable and warm. A nice sweater or coat would also be great to have.

  45. Seattle Travel Blogger

I always make sure to wear layers when I go walking in the cooler weather. I always end up taking some off after I’ve warmed up a bit!

  46. Fariha N.

I love the convertible pants. My son has a few pairs for those days where the mornings are kind of cool but then it gets too hot for long pants later in the day. They are perfect.

  47. mellissa williams

I do a lot of walking and a waterproof jacket is essential and good walking shoes. I love my Sketchers for walking as they are very comfy.

  48. Donna @OrdCyclingGirl

Winter is ALL about cosy for me. I really struggle with Raynaud’s Disease in my fingers and toes so fashionable style kind of goes out of the window in favour of the warmest things possible! Having said that, as you’ve shown here, finding outdoor wear which is both practical and stylish is possible! I’ve a great jacket from Showerspass in bright red which is perfect for this time of year.

  49. Anna,Dont Cramp My Style

Oh these looks ace! I love your pics! I used to hate walking then lately I kind of enjoy it? When I went on holiday I loved it! I think it means I am growing up into an full adult at last ๐Ÿ˜‰

  50. Nadine-Johanna Stewart

I really hate winter. It’s cold and wet, not my cup of tea. I am usually refusing to buy a warm winter coat. The last two years all I wore were my trench coats with another layer underneath. Silly, I know. No wonder I am cold.

  51. Kara

I walk a lot, the school runs daily and farther with the kids. Keeping me and them dry is priority

  52. Kim Carberry

I don’t go walking as such but on the school run a waterproof and warm coat is a must! Wellies too on a rainy day ๐Ÿ™‚

  53. Kerry (@Ohsoamelia_blog)

I like the look of that raincoat, I haven’t had a proper raincoat since I was a teenager and used to go walking all the time with my dad. Great post! xx

  54. mummy ms memories

Yes… I have all these, and the most expensive item is my waterproof jacket. Thankfully brought in a n outlet shop, its worth its wait in gold.. or a bit more probably! I also wear walking shoes, like walking boots but cuts off at the ankle just like a trainer!
A backpack is must with the kid in tow too!

  55. ana

I have always wanted to try hiking but unfortunately don’t have as much energy as I used to due to health issues. Still these are some great tips and that jacket will keep any hiker comfortable/ safe/ warm!

  56. Helen Dickinson

I love keeping as dry as possible on the preschool run. Nothing worse than being a soggy mess. I find that a nice comfy dry pair of shoes is key as well as a nice thick warm jacket.

  57. Claire

A good raincoat and walking shoes are definitely essential, oh and the backpack for emergency chocolate of course ๐Ÿ™‚

  59. Anthea Holloway

I walk dogs a lot and I love my hiking boots which are waterproof.

  60. Pinkoddy

You know I have just started walking/running more and never even thought that I need to rekit myself out for the bad weather! I had better get on to buying some or it will be just an excuse to stop wont it!

  61. Ickle Pickle

I love the jacket – I love walking on the beach so decent boots are a must. And a storm proof coat! Kaz x

  62. Mandi

The whole family enjoy hiking and being outdoors, much to my mum’s disbelief as she never encouraged me to like the colder weather, all those years I detested sitting on a beach! We never mind what the weather is because we all have the right gear, there is nothing worse than having an amazing view ruined by chattering teeth!

  63. Daniella

I love the colour of that jacket! It’s chucking it down right now and I have to leave the house, so I’ll take all of that please. ๐Ÿ˜›

  64. Sonya Cisco

I do 5 miles a day just on the school run, and I def need a backpack – a handbag is too much of a nuisance while trying to manage school bags and small people on scooters!

  65. mummy little blog

great colour we do tons of walking i saw we I do.

  66. Jen

I have to keep my feet warm and dry! I don’t mind getting rained on as long as my feet stay cosy ๐Ÿ™‚
