Lets Get Saving with The Summer Saving Challenge

Let’s Get Saving with The Summer Saving Challenge

Savings they are something I have been trying to work on this year. In fact, I've even set up a new blog Simply Saving to try and talk about some of the bargains I find alongside some saving tips.

However, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop talking about money over here and to just prove that point I am kicking off this Friday by telling you all about the Summer Saving Challenge, I am taking on with Shepherds Friendly.

Lets Get Saving with The Summer Saving Challenge

What is the Summer Saving Challenge?

It is quite simple really, over 6 weeks, Shepherds Friendly are asking you to make 3 changes to see how much you could save.

These changes can be as big, or small as you want.

You could look at:

  • Cancelling subscriptions you never use.
  • Turning off your lights when you leave the room.
  • Car share.
  • Getting a smart meter.
  • Swapping going to the gym for a home workout.
  • Giving up your morning coffee from a coffee shop.

Just to name a few ideas.

You Have your Three Ideas what Next?

Especially for the Summer Saving Challenge, Shepherds Friendly have come up with a savings sheet. This allows you to keep track of your challenges and how much you are saving, daily, weekly and overall.

Hopefully seeing how much you are managing to put away, will help you look at ways you can keep on saving, once the challenge is over.

Which challenges am I Taking on?

While I am still to start my challenge I thought it would be interesting to share with you on day 1 the ideas I have for the following 6 weeks.

The first two weeks, I am definitely going to be looking over the subscriptions I have going. While we use a lot of them, I also know I have some which I've signed up to as I want to partake in what they offer. However, I have never got around to using.

For the second fortnight, I am thinking about turning things off. Not just the lights, but also all electronics. This one really comes to mind as I've been having issues turning the taps off of late (thanks health). So I've been letting the water run away and I'm sure I've been doing that with the pennies as well.

Lastly, I want to do more research when I go to buy things. Look up price comparisons, check for vouchers all the whole deal for the final fortnight of the challenge.

  5. Stacie

This is so great! I’ll have to take this challenge. We’re not terrible about saving, but the more the better, I think.

I always love to save! I’ll try these out for sure. I have canceled some things that I never used, so that’s a start.

  7. Anosa

It sounds like such a really good challenge, something that I could get into. I am also working on saving money this year

  8. Scott Gombar

I found a good way to figure out what subscriptions you no longer need. Get a new debit card. Then wait for the next 30 days as they start sending you emails saying we had a problem charging your account. Then pick and choose the ones you no longer need.

  9. Mom Life Optimized

We looked into all of this at the beginning of the summer and cancelled our gym membership while it was nice out, saving us $100 a month and then putting a certain amount of money for the month on our Starbucks card and if we ran out before the end of the month we had to wait until the 1st, have saved us $100s.

  10. Stephanie | Adventures in Aussieland

I love this idea! I’m always down to save money. Especially since I live overseas and flying back home for major events can be quite expensive.

  11. Teresa

Smart tips! We turned off cable at the beginning of the year (just about killed my husband haha)! and I no longer purchase coffee outside of the house – which is actually a HUGE savings!

    • Sarah-Louise Bailey

Haha I can imagine if I said we were doing the same it would do that to Ash, but that said we have a pretty good price for broadband / home phone + TV.

  12. Tara Pittman

I love saving money. Having money in the bank is great for me as I am able to go see my daughter next week as she is having a baby.

  13. Crystal

These are great tips. We are planning to cancel the cable television services to start saving some money.

  14. Trina

Awesome Idea! I went a little to crazy over my birthday month and spent more than I usually do going out with the kids so now I am all about getting back on the savings train!

  15. Gillian Kent

I did these things after my husband moved out. It was an opportunity to take control and it did improve my monthly finances.

  16. Denay DeGuzman

These challenges are perfect for me! I need to get better about turning off the lights and ceiling fans in the rooms I’m not using. Just this afternoon I was thinking about a few subscriptions I need to cancel. This post is a great reminder to start tackling things and saving money.

  17. Mr. T

What a great idea. “Having to save” is often seen a negative thing, but by putting this nice twist on it, it becomes a fun game!

  18. Louise Joy

This is a really good idea. I have so many subscriptions I need to cancel. I also spend loads of money on buying lunch everyday when I can just make it at home! X

  19. Rhian westbury

I don’t have a lot of subscriptions as I cancelled a lot of mine when I was trying to save money x

  20. sara lafountain

This is a great idea! I am going to look at all our subscriptions and see where I can cut a few. I would love to get rid of Netflix but the kids would probably revolt!

  21. Paula Schuck

Okay I know summer is almost over. I have been making small changes anyways to be more cost efficient here. One is definitely cancelling subscriptions. That’s a simple way to declutter too.

  22. Emma Riley

Wow, this is such a great post. We are actually doing these things in our family and it is really helpful.

  23. Brittany Vantrease

Instead of paying for cable, we pay for Netflix and Amazon Prime. We have saved hundreds of dollars by doing that. Whenever I go shopping, I use reverse couponing apps that give me cash back for things that I already buy so when I want to buy something unnecessary, I have that little pile of cash at the ready.

  24. Ruth I.

I’m usually frugal but I’d love to take this challenge. I think I will need to stay away from stationery stores as I buy lots of notebooks and pens even when I know I don’t need them.

  25. Amy h

This sounds like a great challenge. I love some of the suggestions you give on where to save.

  26. Mommy Sigrid

It’s not just the summer for us but everyday. haha We penny pinch here and there because we have goals. But we also don’t sacrifice what we have in the present. 😀

  27. Nichola - Globalmouse

Sounds like a great challenge. I’m trying to be better about turning things off when I leave a room and getting the kids involved too, it’s so wasteful to just leave things running but it’s hard to change a habit! I’ll get there though.

  28. Margaret Gallagher

Always up for SAVING CHALLENGES – certaintly will make all the difference – im ready – i willing !

  29. Terri Beavers

I can think of several of your tips that would help me save as well. I have cable and never ever watch TV with it. I always watch Netflix or Amazon prime. I’ve been thinking of getting rid of it and your post just reminded me of that. I just made myself a note to do that this week.

  30. Lynndee

What an awesome challenge. I definitely would like to save more. I will have to check on the smart meter.

  31. Helen Moulden

We’re desperately saving money at the moment too. We’ve just bought our first home and didn’t realise how expensive furniture is! We’ve cut out all unnecessary things (e.g. bought tea/coffee, bought sandwiches) and it’s surprising how fast the money mounts up!

  32. Toughcookiemommy

One of the things that we’ve done this summer to save some money is to stop eating out so much. It’s amazing how much money we were spending by eating out.

  33. Wanda Lopez

What a great and fun challenge. I can see some places where I can make some changes and save up.

  34. Heather

Now this is a challenge I need to take part of. We have the hardest time saving money since we had kids.

  35. Rachel

I’m pretty terrible at saving. I do like to collect piggy banks though!

  36. David Elliott

This sounds like it’s pretty awesome. I will have to give my daughter this challenge because I want to teach her how to manage her money better. It’s so important.

  37. Up Run for Life Healthy Lifestyle Blog

My husband goes through and cancels things that we aren’t using. I wish he would kill the gym membership bc he isn’t using it. Its not a ton of money but if it’s not being used why pay for it.

  38. The Motherhood Club

I need to join this challenge! It has aleays been very hard for me to save! Thanks for sharing

  39. Super Busy Mum

So many lovely saving tips there. I will certainly be trying to join in!

  40. Princess Quinn

I would love to take part of this challenge. I need to cut off on some subscriptions as well.

  41. Angela Ricardo Bethea

Saving money is really important and challenging for kids. and its really important to teach them how to save money and the importance of using money in the right way at a younger age.

  42. Flyingkids

This is a very helpful and informative blog post. It’s consist of tips on how you can save money considering the difficulties and changes that you need to face during the process.

  43. Michelle Jones

Great post! I’m going to do this after the kids go back to school to see what I can save and put in the Xmas (sorry) pot. We have smart meters so can’t save there But I’m on a water meter and tend to always leave it running a lot longer than I should, especially when my health is at its worst and my ocd kicks in hard. Im trying to encourage my partner and teen to do more too with turning things off etc.

  44. Natalie

This is a pretty great idea. My job is seasonal, so I save money throughout the year, so I don’t have to work during the summer break that I’m off. That’s about the only real saving I do.
