Essential oils are also known as aetherolea, and are extracted from various plants through a variety of processes including distillation, solvent extraction, and expression. They are not “oily” in nature, contrary to their name, and have distinctive scents. Essential oils have a number of benefits, and are used in beauty products, for the purpose of aromatherapy, and are even used as cleaning agents.
The beauty and wellness industry uses essential oils to relieve stress and other health problems, and adds essential oils to commonly used beauty products such as massage oils, face masks, and moisturizers. Carrier oils such as almond, olive, grape seed, apricot, peanut and hemp seed oil are commonly used to dilute the essential oil and nourish the skin. Essential oils should never be directly applied to the skin, as they could cause irritation and sensitization.
Essential oils are used in households as room fresheners, deodorizers and even as mosquito repellents. A blend of 15 drops of Citronella oil, 10 drops of Lavender oil, 10 drops of Eucalyptus oil and 5 drops of Lemongrass oil, when added to 6 teaspoons of distilled water and 6 teaspoons of vodka, results in an environment-friendly liquid which can be sprayed around the house to discourage mosquitoes and other insects.
One of the most common benefits of essential oil lies in their ability to calm and relax the senses. Blending 8 drops of Lavender Essential Oil with 8 drops of Ylang Ylang oil and placing them in a diffuser or directly on a pillow is said to relieve stress and insomnia.
Pain and stress relief are also benefits of adding essential oils to ones regular massage oil. Blending 10-12 drops of essential oil with 6 teaspoons [1 ounce] carrier oil [olive oil is the most preferred kind] results in a massage oil with numerous health benefits. Muscle pain is relieved via a blend of lavender and rosemary essential oil, whereas a headache can be relieved with a blend of sesame seed carrier oil and 2 drops of Spikenard essential oil.
Inhaling specific blends of essential oils can aid digestion; 10 drops each of Cardamom, Ginger, and Tarragon essential oil mixed together create a blend which can be massaged onto the stomach, or ingested by adding 3 drops to a cup of tea. Relief for flu and sinus can be sought by blending Niaouli [6 tsp], Lavender [2 tsp], Lemon [2 tsp], Pine [3 tsp] and Rosemary [3 tsp] essential oils with Alcohol [4 ½ cups] and inhaling [ 3tsp with 6 cups of boiling water], or by adding 3-5 drops to bath water/foot baths.
Thanks to their anti-infectious, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties, essential oils and essential oil blends have become an essential addition to health and wellness, and their versatile nature, accessibility and affordability makes them a safe, non-toxic addition to a person’s lifestyle. Their pleasant aroma and ability to positively impact mind, body, and soul makes them a favorite for people who are looking to ease the stress of daily living and just relax.
